Ruger 10/22 models

I just pick up the stainless from dicks sporting goods. I had a 10 dollar off card. I payed $234 out the door. The new and used 10 22 are about the same price. The down side to the new are plastic trigger guard. It looks strong. The up side is new parts no problems. I plan on barrel up grade. Its nice to have a back up or I can sell it to off set the cost. Oh and the new ones have extended mag release. Looks like the best open sights are made by nds. So the houge stock and nds sites will hold me till I can get a barrel

Like stated above, it depends on your use. Heavy barrels are heavy so if your shooting off-hand and walking then weight becomes a variable. If your shooting from a bench or prone then it doesn't matter. I have found that pretty much all 10/22s are capable of being very accurate in stock form with a little work.

excuse me for this question: why is a little work required to be accurate? shouldn't the rifle be accurate out of the box?

It really depends upon your intended use and your goals for the rifle.

I went with a heavy barrel model because I did not want to have to rework or replace the stock (but I did replace the barrel and extractor and added sling swivels and upgraded the sights.)

If you want to hit tin cans at 15 feet get the cheapest one you can find and you are done.

If you want an accurate toy you have work to do and parts to replace.

I have a basic 10/22.
At 50 yards it's easy to pick off tin cans.
At 100 yards more difficult, but still can be done.

Mostly the trigger. A stock 10/22 can be accurate enough for plinking or hunting. But that stock trigger is set at 8-9 lbs, just too heavy if you're looking for the smallest groups possible.

A 10/22 is plenty accurate right out of the box, you can shoot soda cans all day at 50 yards with it. If you want to shoot dime size groups at that distance, you'll need to make some upgrades.
