Which Appleseed 22LR Rifle?

I'm looking for a simple Appleseed 22LR rifle. So far, I prefer the Marlin 795 to the Ruger 10-22. Does Savage have a good model?

Here is what I'm looking for-
semi-auto 22LR
peep sight, can be aftermarket
box magazine (not tube)
provision for a sling, can be aftermarket
I've a tall face, so need enough drop at the comb so I can get my eye down to the sights

What do you suggest?

795 is a great rifle for appleseed, everything you want is available. So is the 10/22. If the 795 fits your face (check weld is high importance)then go with it. Savage has a great rifle except there is one issue, the mag release kinda sucks, but the rifle is great. I dont know if Techsights have a model for Savage.

The 795 buttstock to me was pretty low so it sounds like it should fit you well

Also Boyd's makes stocks for the 795/60 although not 100% drop in, they are pretty easy to fit

In my personal opinion the ideal Appleseed rifle is a wooden stock Ruger 10/22 with sling studs installed, 1-1/2" swivels, a GI sling, TechSights TSR100 adjustable sights, and 3-4 spare magazines. That's pretty much what the course was designed around but you can use anything you like. If the 795 floats your boat better go for it. There is no wrong answer as long as you have a GI sling.

Ruger I have heard is nice, but the 795 can be put together for so much less.

I don't run one but I have read about people that do and they really like it. It's a shame it's not the default sight any more. The rear sight the 795 comes with is pretty cheap.

From what I understand you tighten / loosen the screw the change elevation and you tap the rear section for wind age


I bought my girlfriend a set of fire sights for her 795 for Christmas. We haven't shot it with them yet but they seem really well built and very bright.

They appear to adjust the same way.

Cheek rest

Once you put a scope or any of the aftermarket sights on you rifle you will find the stock comb is too low. Here is one solution from ATI. I have this on one of my 10-22s and it works well. A 99 cent store swim noodle and some tape also works. Take the remainder of the swim noodle to your Appleseed (they are about 4 feet long) and make a lot of new friends! The average .22 today is built for a 12 year old.

Must not be familiar with CZ, Savage, Zastava, BRNO, Anschutz and other quality built .22 firearms that don't need to be modified to be tack drivers.

Most rifles in synthetic stocks feel like toys due to light weight. Nothing wrong with that, just the way it is.

Neoprene Mouse Pads can be cut up and layered under it to adjust the height.

The swim noodle or pipe insulation are good temporary fixes that many Appleseeds do use though.

While I do agree with you Izzy, he did say average. Some of the rifles you listed are on the high end. Common 22lr rifles you will see on the wall at your gun store will seem to be built smaller

I prefer my 10/22 because the mag doesn't protrude out the bottom of the stock.
