I tried to take down and clean my 10/22 and I couldn't take out the large pin to remove the bolt and guide rod. I'm assuming its a push pin like all the others in the receiver, I tried it out with a philips and hammer on both sides but with no luck. I wanted to try to heat the pin with a lighter but though against it because I didn't know if it would harm the finish. Its a new gun, I bought it a couple weeks ago, how do I get this pin out? your help is much appriated.

10/22 take down Question

Ibefuz,
The large pin in the rear is nothing more than a bolt stop. It should just push out super easy to remove the lower receiver and remove. In fact both (large and small) pins practically fall out! Now regarding the pin to take the bolt out to clean your Ruger I don't know nor have anything on my 10-22's like what you describe. Are you putting some form of pressure on the bolt???

I used one of the trigger group pins with a hammer to punch that pin out. While it's out, you should consider changing it out for a softer pin. I made mine out of a piece of rubber tubing with a drill bit shank in the center.(\__/)

The pin should practically fall out. The only thing holding it in should be the stock. Don't apply heat because the finish is just paint and may be damaged. BTW I second replacing the bolt stop pin with something softer such as what was described. All the factory bolt stop/pin is is a dowel pin.Last edited by sholling; 01-29-2012, 9:18 AM."Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--

The first couple times I cleaned the 10/22 the bolt stop pin was very resistant. Now after a 4-5 breakdowns it now comes easier. I recommend getting a punch kit that has 3-5 punches in varying sizes plus a brass punch rather than using a small phillips screwdriver. The kits are ~ $17 locally and are just a nice toolset to have around.
+1 on replacing the bolt pin with a softer version.Last edited by JavaBrewer; 01-29-2012, 10:10 AM.Comment

That pin is really set in. I don't have a bolt punch yet but a trip to harbor freight will change that soon. All the other smaller pins do indeed just fall out. But the largest pin holding the bolt in would not come out. Ill try again today after workComment

Mine was really jammed in there as well. I finally got it out with a hammer and punch. I had to use much more force than I thought I should on a gun! When I got it out it looked as though the stop was bent. I already had a polymer replacement on hand so I just threw the metal one out.Comment

I agree with all the above posters... My pins all fall out now, the first break down did require a punch though.... Even my trigger group pins all out now... But that forced me to learn how to reassemble the trigger group
