My little Marlin 795 has rust all over the barrel. It was inside a soft padded case and somehow water spilled on it and seeped through. I don't know how long it was wet but when I opened it there were rust spots eating through the paint. I wiped it down with a silicone rag and most of the rust simply came. What's the best way to get it off? Im thinking steel wool the entire barrel and repaint. Any other suggestions?

Use brass wool, not steel. Steel wool leaves small particles that are very difficult to completely remove and will rust over time. Brass doesn't and will do just as good as the steel wool.My little Marlin 795 has rust all over the barrel. It was inside a soft padded case and somehow water spilled on it and seeped through. Is the 795 barrel painted, I thought it was blued. If blued first try some good gun oil and a synthetic pad, it might remove the rust. Then keep the exterior of the barrel oiled to prevent more rust.
Storing guns in a padded case is not a good idea. Humidity will get in there and rust will begin, usually inside the barrel first. If you don't have a safe or cabinet with humidity control its best to just store them in the open such as in a closet or on a wall rack. A thin layer of gun oil in the barrel and on all exterior metal will help. -
Yeah its blued. Good thing I haven't done done anything yet Thx for the infoComment

If the rust has not eaten into the metal yet (surface rust), flood the surface with a good oil like Breakfree CLP, let it soak for a while, then use the edge of a pre-1980 COPPER penny to scrape the rust off with no damage to the surface. Keep a coating of CLP on the metal to prevent rusting in the future. Good luck!Comment

Clenzoil works very well also. Many others out there that work good too. WD-40 and Tri-Flow also work very good. If you have any rusted metal similar to your rifle, then try to experiment with various oils. You can spend a lot of money on major gun brands but, there are other oils that work as well. There is also a good metal cleaner called "BIG 45 FRONTIER METAL CLEANER". It is like steel wool but, it's not. I have been using it for years. Just last week on a W. Richards S/S shotgun that was made in 1871. My customer was amazed though it is a wall hanger.

This is what you need:
Had good reviews from C&R milsurp site, use a .22 cal nylon brush.
The Blue Wonder Bore Cleaner completely removes copper & lead deposits, powder residues, plastic build-up, and black powder corrosion!
I used it to do the initial clean of my milsurp rifles to remove rust, grime, cosmoline...Comment
