Ruger 10 22, Scope and Appleseed

    Greetings

Just picked up a Ruger 10 22 and going to Appleseed..plan on attending several events this year. I want to learn how to shoot a rifle well. I shot rifles as a boy with my Dad..picked it up again and going full forward. Problem is that I'm now 56 years old and my eyes are not as good as when I was a kid. I'm near sighted..need glasses at night while driving..went shooting a month ago and noticed past 25 yards things get a little fuzzy (was not wearing my glasses but protective glasses non prescription).

Question is: would it be a good idea to mount a scope? if so, recommendations..any good ones under $100?

Thanks and really looking forward to this

Check out the other topic forum we have here "Appleseed" and search/read up what people have said.

These are good scopes for rimfire, high quality brands, keep the objective under 40mm otherwise the scope gets too bulky on 22LR rifles.

I use this UTG 4x32 because of the long eye releif, the glass is not bad though for a $55.00 scope and has held zero without a problem, I also didn't want a very long scope on my 10/22. I will be doing an Appleseed with it in April.

a 3 or 4 power scope works great for an Appleseed.
Use the shortest rings that will barely keep the scope from touching the barrel.

To get best results I would also plan on building up the comb of the stock such that you can see thru the scope when your cheek is firmly planted on the stock. For most of us the factory Ruger stock is too short.

Rock6.3 is 100% correct on the stock, I use a BlackHawk cheek pad and it makes a big difference.

For the money this scope is pretty nice, clear and not too pricey. I have one and really like it for 50 yds and under.

I use the Nikon 2x7x32 dialed in to 4x. You don't want to have too much magnification for an appleseed, or you'll over think / fuss the shot.

There's nothing like a $50 or $100 scope losing zero in the 1st hour of a 2 day event. At about $130 delivered a Weaver Classic Rimfire in 2.5-7x28 is about ideal and is a rock solid little scope. This is a scope that optically and mechanically is in the same league as a Nikon Buckmaster or a Leupold VX-1. Scope Rankings

For rings I use $15 Leupold rimfire rings from Walmart. They work just fine, but you'll need a cheek pad to get a good cheek weld. If you don't want to spend that much then you can just use TechSights TSR-100 iron sights.

You will need a GI sling as well.

Well you definitely came to the right spot and everyone has given you great answers. Nikons, Weavers, BSA, Leupold, Redfield. i would add, to stay away from just a regular pair of rings if you are using standard tip-off rings.

I've been twice and plan to attend one more sometime this year. It's a whole lot of fun.

Appleseed is great. I thought I was a good shot until I went. I am now a much better shot. I was going to go this year too but I don't see any events near me (san diego). I was told there was going to be another one in dulzura this year but I guess not . To add to everyones suggestions, I would add the VQ target hammer and bolt release package from midwayusa. Best $45 upgrade to the 10/22 IMHO. Have fun!!

Yup, did that all ready, and this time I am doing both Appleseed days, I could only do the first day last time I went.

Barska 4x32 plinker online for about $40. Works on my 10/22 for distances out to about 300 yds.
