17 hmr rifle selection.

I am interested in buying a 17 hmr and know I do not want a boot action.
What other choices do I have? I like a lever action but don't want to spend the money for a Henry. I want to budget around $300.00.
Something compact would also be great.

with only $300 to spend all you will be able to get is a bolt gun.

Like sk said.They run more.I have seen a single shot for less than that.You may find a used Henry for that at a gunshow.Consider a 22 Mag,and shoot Hornadys, Premium Winchester,Remington ammo.I think Rem makes a 597 automatic in that.I shoot a lot of 17HMR and 22 Mag.Others make pumps I believe.I would take the 22 mag over the 17 due to the new type ammo that is out.I like my bolt action Rugers and Savages.

I found the Henry 17HMR in lever action octagon or varmint.Buds Gun Shop,Kentucky.$438 shipped to you FFL.A couple FFLs in my area charge $25 to recieve.With tax and dros,comes to $526.I was shocked at the cost of a new one.Thank you Fj for pointing it out.

Winchester I believe used to make a lever.Seems they can be had for over $1000 or more.Yea-crazy-Huh.

For a non-bolt action at around $300 or less:
Rossi single shot (shotgun/rifle combo) about $300
H&R single shot for about $215

The cheapest 17HMR lever is the Henry for about $550

if you MUST have semi for ~300 (prolly a little more) buy a remington 597 in .22 MAG and get it rebarreled in .17 at a LISCENSED AND COMPETENT GUNSMITH and have the gunsmith beef up the bolt and add a stiffer spring. it is REQUIRED for this rifle to be anywhere near a SAFE .17, but probably wont be as safe as a volquartesn or the excel accellorater rifle which is gonna be around the same price as the remington idea. also there are .17 hmr upper recievers for AR style rifles.

there are semi auto choices, they are just exensive. i vote save your money and get custom volquartsen or just get a bolt to get acquainted with this little calliber so you can save up and get another rifle. bolts are inherintly more accurrate because of the lack of moving parts in the action other than the firing pin and trigger mech when the round is fired.

I have a bolt action .308 and dont want another in such a small caliber. More preference than anything.

I would think long and hard about converting any semi to a .17HMR. All but one manufacturer recalled their semi 17HMR due to serious safety issues. If the manufacturer's couldn't figure it out then what's the chance a local gunsmith can and the cost will not be SMALL in any case. If one just has to have a semi with some punch I'd go with a .22WMR and save the hassle.

Alexanderarms has the 17hmr upper out mine is in the mail can't wait for it. Semi auto is nice for squirrels on the run

Yea not a prob im just trying to figure out what scope im going to get my upper should be here in 2 weeks and I don't even have a clue
