BX-25 Mag in California?

I have some old 10 22, 25 round magazines that I've had since before 2000. I really want some of the new Ruger BX-25 mags and I saw places offering them as parts kits for California. I don't see how that would work since they weren't even made until after 2000. Can I buy a parts kit and disassemble my old 25 rounders and essentially replace every part so that I now have a legal BX-25?

IF you can dissemble your old magazine and use one of the original parts in the new BX-25 then you can do it.

Problem 1 I highly doubt you can dissemble your old magazine
Problem 2 I highly doubt you can interchange any part

IF you can get past those issues then you can later change out that one part with the new part. (Yes I know that sounds silly why didn't you just do that in the first place, legal hurdles)

At no point can you have more regular capacity mags then you started with


All that said doesn't mean a cop wont give you a hard time

Obviously I probably can't interchange any parts. I was hoping the part about me not having any more magazines than I started with might save me if I disassembled my old ones.

Some of the plastic banana mags come part easily....Eatons in particular.
Most of these mags use the snail coil type spring, which can easily be reused in place of the BX25 spring....Eatons and Ramlines use these springs, so do Butler Creeks.
These springs rarely loose their tension, so using one that is 20 years old or so is no concern.
The snail spring has a guiding collar in the middle, this can also be used to replace the BX25 part.
The spring retaining pin can also be reused.
The Eaton follower in particlular is easily modified to work in the BX25 mag.
So yes, you can actually legally rebuild your old mag using the body and feed lips only from a BX25.

Just do not end up with more over-10-round mags than you started out with.

cause there are people that can buy those like LEOs and some people just like to have the parts kit so when they go out of state they can use it?

iirc, the feedlips are interchangeable with a aftermarket magazine, not sure which one, but i could have remembered wrong.

Parts kits do not meet the definition of "magazine" so they are not violating the importation part of the law.

But if you build it (not as a rebuild or blocked to 10 rounds) you are violating the manufacturing part.

It's all a tight rope act, playing with the wording of our silly laws.

Problem 1

first off if you are repairing a old ramline they split on the seam just fine, atleast my 25+ year old ones do... if yours isnt split already just break it open, you dont need to old one anyways ....

Problem 2

you can use the spring coil from the ramline in the BX without modding too much, or break out the dremel and some jbweld and you can make the follower work in a BX

Am I good or do I not pass go and go directly to jail? Has anyone here done the same thing and are using them?

anyone running pmags and other such new magazines for ar15's seem to not be hassled that much.

possession is legal, and it is up to the cops to prove you didn't have old standard cap magazines that you rebuilt using new magazine parts.

for what? there is nothing illegal about having ANY mag , the burden of proof is on LEO

Yeah I have kind of had this same question in a few cases. I have a registered AW AR15 with tons of the old school 30 round mags and I was wondering if I could convert to some of the new styles. I also have a bunch of 15 round Beretta 92FS mags and I wanted to convert to the new sand resistant mags that come with the 92FS M9A1.

. Well in this case I will have a mag that didn't even come out until after 2000. So that might be proof enough for some. I don't want to get to the part where I am explaining to the judge how I started out ordering BX-25 parts for my old mags and it eventually evolved into a full BX-25 mag.

LEO's can legally buy them fully assembled, and its not impossible for them to break and need replacement parts. Its also not impossible to have found one if you are a non-LEO, even if highly improbable.
