I love your sentiment and I believe your heart is in the right place, with this said this type of situation does come with great responsibility and not with out a great deal of liability on your part.
I have thought of doing this in the past.
Sons friends from a good, but poor family, what could go wrong?
Unless you are related or very close to the family you really do not know their history.
Have found out before gifting a gun that there has been drug use and in another case child abuse in the family that was unknown at the time.
Better you buy the gun and keep it and let him know that he is free to use it when he is with you and under your supervision only.
After the child turns 18 and all still is well then you could gift it to him and have it transferred into his name to let you out of your liability.
Just my opinion, but thank you for wanting to do something so generous and to cultivate future shooters.

I agree with Nastyhabts26. Unless you know this family real well, I'd avoid that.

Now if the kid's parents are ok with you takin him along on the occasional shooting trip(.22 and such) once in a blue moon, stick with that.

I could not agree more. Its great that you want to help out and unfortunately in our litigation crazy society you have to protect your and your family first. Getting a rifle that he can use and letting him know that it will become his (after following certain rules) is a great thing to do. Just be careful as things can change in any family these days and you don't want to be on the wrong side of any situation. Remember, "no good deed goes unpunished". All that said, your heart is in the right place and in all likelyhood it will help that young boy grow into a good young man.

Thanks for the concern guys...I saw some model 60s at a auction in the $10 to $40 range ...ill see if that price holds by Sat. The kids dad's work is slow and his mom quit her state teaching job to home school his premature brother. They have 4 boys and my son has gone to school with him for about 10 years. They have attended church and youth groups togather as long as I can remember. He has been borrowing my sons youth gun but all the kids arms are getting kinda long for that little cut down gun and he was getting teased at the "pop gun night " (.22 only) shoots at our range. So it is time for him to get his own gun and something that has not been cut down for a 6 year old. He is 15, drives his family to school, gets good grades, plays jazz guitar in the school band and deserves a good 16th birthday present....so ill round something up for him to be sure.

There are millions of 10/22's floating around and lots of them get modded. That being said there is a good chance you can find people willing to give you their left over barrels, bolts firing pins, sights etc, etc?? The receiver will be tougher to find for free.

I myself have the factory wood stock from a mid 90's (bought new) in mint condition as well as the factory barrel (mint), charging handle and barrel band/strap and folding sights and maybe some other misc parts.

On the stock I removed the plastic buttplate and replaced it with a rubber one, so I had to hand sand the wood stock flush to fit the rubber pad. I also have some scope rings I could donate too if you get enough other people to donate the other junk.

Would be doing me a favor to get rid of this clutter. I'm not interesetd in shipping any of it though, so it would have to be picked up.

it's not just litigious society you have to worry about
it's the DA's that want to criminalize gun owners, too

Question: Will you have the father DROS the rifle into his name or will it be a loaner rifle?
I suspect DROS since you keep mentioning it will be for a birthday?

Surprised no one mentioned it already but are you sure no one in the house is a felon? Not implying anything just playing devils advocate.

I've got a 10/22 syn stock I painted camo you can have if you wanna pay to ship it.

You may find someone whose wife doesn't like the fact that there's a gun in her house and you may find a deal that way.

Yep, dad will DROS it and mom is onboard with having a gun in the house. I will be getting them a locker / safe or they can use mine in the mean time...

rckjeep ..that is a great offer I will talk to my FFL in the morning and see if they will do the transfer on the cheap. Most guys in my area want $100 to have a gun shipped to them. They may just charge DROS in this case. I would be glad to pay shipping and if you drink red wine i'll send you a few bottles.

Sidewinder...He has his permit and drives to school and his mom drives back so she can have the car during the day...I think it is the reverse when they go home ...I only drop kids off to school I don't pick up so I don't know the whole story. I just see him driving.

chad68...What a great offer and great idea. Thank you...I was just in Sonoma a week ago and would have cleaned you out had I known....I think I could buy him a new gun for what my old truck would burn in gas to come up and get the parts from you...Thank you for the generous offer..LOL

I might be wrong but I think he offered you a stock not a rifle...

Not that you are going to listen because you haven't to anyone else but every time I see this thread I cringe. This is a horrible idea in this day in age unfortunately.

I also agree with nastyhabts26's idea

chaos47......you got it correct on the stock issue...I did not. I read it as a feature I.E. 10/22 with synthetic stock painted camo....still a nice offer

Truth is I am flabbergasted with the mindset of the cal gunners on this thread all the doom and gloom....I was hoping for more than a gun for this kid. Fact is kids now days need life lessons...kids need to see hope and miraculous provision. This next generation has to learn to believe in each other and in mankind, and in generosity instead of self consumption. I was hoping for a rifle with history and a great story, something he would remember his whole life ...his first rifle. I wanted him to have a story about how someone came throught for him. Not a big 5 off the rack gun but something someone invested in him. I can afford any rifle I want to buy for the kid, is was not about the money, it was about the process , the history and story behind the rifle. If you check my past posts you will see a Colt Sauer .300 win mag I have had for sale in here I will probably give that to him or swap it for something nice with less recoil and will not loose a lick of sleep over them having it.
