.22LR Residue, anybody else have sand?

Every time I go out shooting my .22LR upper on my AR I find sand like residue all over the entire inside of my rifle.

It's a pain to clean out and im starting to wonder if its my ammo or if it is just normal for a blow back operated semi.

I bought this huge order of CCI Mini Mags so that is all I have been shooting.

It's more likely ground glass from the primer.

      "Design Shortcomings
On a good day, the ignition potential of the .22 rimfire priming system is weak. Because there is no anvil, the lead styphnate rimfire priming compound requires the addition of ground glass as a frictioning agent. Ground glass is not "bore friendly," but without it, .22 rimfire priming will not function. And, to date, no lead-free priming compounds suitable for .22 rimfire have been found. "

Is it black? Then its unburnt powder, its just the nature of the beast.

I really doubt its the ground glass that's in the primer and therefore a very small part of the actual charge.

          It's black.

I will try collecting some and rinse it under water and see what happens.

If it is indeed unburnt powder, how abrasive is it? I'm concerned with it getting between metal parts and opening up tolerances. Especially on my trigger.

in my case, my guns get cleaned every time they get shot, so its not a problem. If you clean your gun every 3-400 rounds i dont see it becoming a problem.

.22lr is dirty in a semi auto, no way around it.

I wouldn't worry about it being abrasive.

People have been shooting 22lrs for a long time you would think you would have heard about this issue by now if it was a problem.

Also remember there are some very high end expensive 22lr rifles out there like Anschutz and the rifles they use in the Olympics. I think your AR will be fine

In our CMMG dedicated AR we only use RemDriLube as a lubricant and I have used this stuff many years in all rimfires and it works great..You will be surprised how much cleaner it stays in there and how much easier it is to clean when the time comes...Ours is a stainless bolt but it works great in parkerized setups too...I stopped using liquid lubes in rimfires long ago as it just collects to much crap in there..Using Liquid lube in a rimfire creates a mess for sure....

This is the 2nd thread in the Rimfire section in the last couple days that you are dead wrong about.

I correctly guessed it was black and he confirmed.

It is un-burnt powder not glass.

So true, to me this is the main thing I don't like about 22lr. Cleaning receivers takes twice as long.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I have been using CLP for lube, i'll try something as suggested and see if that helps contain it better.

Chaos47, bring it down a notch. Please?

Try some of the RemDriLube..Even if for some reason you decide you do not want to use it by itself you can still spray everything with a light coat then use some regular oil on top of it and it will still stay cleaner and clean up much easier.I coat the inside of the reciever with a light spray too, it stays cleaner as well and is alot easier to get it clean after shooting.Like I say I have used the stuff for thousands of rounds and it protects and lubes very well..It is what it says by the name..Its a completely dry lube but is very slick when applied and does not attract all the gunk that wet lube does.....

I know if you live in CA this is not so much of a problem but where I live it gets cold and the stuff is not affected by freezing temps..I have been experimenting a little in my AR 15 but am a little nervous about using it in that platform..But if it turns out not to have any long term negative effects I may run it all the time just to see how it would hold up in the .223 application..I just have too much time on my hands and do stuff like this for entertainment..Kinda like a Mad scientist,LOL

                              Mixed with glass. (sand like)

I'm not interested in my post count by the way.
