Returning to Rimfire

Hello All,
So after taking a long break from .22lr to see what the fuss about the big bore rifles is all about I find myself being pulled back to rimfire land. As it stands I have a wz48 and a winchester 1906 but I'm in the market for something semi-auto I won't have to worry about trekking through the woods with.
I know that the 10/22, and the marlin 60 have their devotees. Is this anything more than just a matter of personal taste? How doe the 597 stack up?

As you mentioned the 10/22 and the 60 are great.
I'll probably catch flak for this from someone, I would not own a 597 if it was given to me.
Reason; pretty much every one I have seen jams constantly, does not feel comfortable and is Ugly.

Marlin 60 is accurate and reliable. Tube fed is awesome because you're not limited to 10rds, but you can't load as fast.

10/22 is another great option, and it leaves plenty of room open to tinker if you want to turn it into something awesome...

I have a 10/22, and have had it for 37 years........still shoots great.
The Thompson Center .22 auto is the one I would buy if in the market for another auto.
It's man sized, very good looking, and no magazine sticking out of the bottom.

Of all the rifles and calibers I have, I shoot more .22LR than anything else. It's much cheaper and has improved my shooting skills overall.

I currently am hunting small game with a S&W 15-22 and I must say I love the gun! Is it overpriced? yes. Is it a lot of fun? you bet your brass bass it is! Generally it is a one shot one kill gun for me on squirrels. It also has lots of rail space for lights, lasers etc. that I need for fox control etc. around the farm.

I too now devote a lot more time to shooting 22s---just too much fun not too! At this time, I rotate thru four different 22 rifles that I've had for a loooong time; an old Belguim Browning "Wheelsight" 22 Auto; a "pre-warning" Ruger 10-22 Deluxe Sporter; a very old Remington Nylon 66 (Mohawk Brown); and finally, when things get serious, a Volquartsen full-on 10-22 with fluted stainless barrel and carrying an older Leupold 6.5-20X scope---this rig can shoot the eye out of a squirrel, no problem. I still shoot many centerfire pistols and rifles, but find a day of relaxation with a 22 rifle hard to beat!

If your looking for a bush dragging rifle, I would suggest the carbine 10/22, the S&W 15-22, or course a Marlin 795 and a Henry :-) lever.
All lite weight and accurate, all can take a sling.
The lever will get you extra rounds because of the tube.

My friend has a 597 he likes it. It doesn't have the feeding issues the older ones had. Guess they updated the magazines. He bought it because he felt it had a "full size stock"

Personally I love my Marlin 795 (Magazine fed version of the 60)
Don't let anyone tell you that there isn't parts to modify a Marlin:

That's a nice looking 795. The stock looks like the model 60/795 Boyds tacticool they offered on a limited basis last year.
