My wife bought this 10/22 back in the early 90's in Utah. When the dealer took it out of the box his eyes popped out of his head. I have never seen another stock like it. I am by no means a stock/wood expert. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? Not bad for an original stock - I guess I just got lucky with this piece of wood.

That is definitely a unique stock. To me the wood looks to be curly maple. I of course could be wrong but it is a close match. Different stains will produce a different look with curly maple but either way that is a great stock. Keep ahold of that one. If you decide to get rid of it let me know.

It could be one of those special edition 10/22's or dealer exclusive models. Check the Ruger website, they have a list of all the 10/22 variants and dealer exclusive models they have ever made.

there was a while ('79ish-'80ish) that ruger got Maple cheaper than they could walnut. Then used the same old ugly Ruger mud finish on it. they turned out to be some good looking stocks. later ruger went to birch and every now and then you see something nice.Comment

Not sure I understand your comment about the butt plate. Like Merc1138 stated, it was strictly for LOP. I would agree it is cheap and not the best looking accessory. If you have a better idea I would like to hear it.Comment

I have seen many CZs, Remingtons and Winchesters with the "Curly" look. It is not limited to maple either. I have seen this effect in walnut, beech and goncala alves. When I see it I buy it (raw wood that is) and I make pens and pencils out of this very beautiful wood. See attached.

It could be walnut, it just has some striping (fiddleback). It's not uncommon for Cirsassian, somewhat less common for American (English) walnut.Frank

Beautiful Wood!Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
