OC Range with .22lr Rentals?

I'm located in Orange County and I'm looking for a range that has .22 lr handguns for rental. I want to buy one but would like to try them all first. I'm looking for:

GSG 1911
Ruger MK III
Walther P22
Sig Mosquito
M&P 22

I'm also looking to try the HK416, SIG522 and M&P 15-22. Those probably will not be at a range so if a fellow Calgunner can help me out it would be great. I will compensate



Here is the story. I went to OnTarget yesterday and shot both the Glock 17 and XD 9mm. I liked the XD 9 more. But the most important thing I learned from the trip is that I can't hit water falling out of a boat in the middle of the Pacific. This means I need to a ton of practice before I move to a 9mm.

I know OC Indoor range in Brea has Ruger MK2/3's, 10/22's, and some sort of Ruger .22 revolver. I haven't been to many other ranges that rent... hope this helps =\

I bought a membership at the OC indoor range on Berry street in Brea. They do have some .22's and the membership includes any rental at no charge. You just have to buy their ammo (which is highly priced at $14/hundred for CCI minimags-and you don't get a choice). The good news is that the membership is only $190/year and I think it's a great deal.

I've only rented the Ruger mark 3 but I know that they have others there to try. I just don't know what they are. I do encourage you to start with a .22 just for cost alone and to economically work on the fundamentals.

I used to fire up to 100 rounds of hot handloaded .44 magnum per range trip and even with handloading, this becomes quite costly as I do at least 2 range trips per week. On a whim, I "rented" a Ruger mark 3 target from them and ended up buying one from them. Now I shoot mostly .22, up to 200 or so rounds and only a few .44 magnum- maybe 12 to 24 per trip. Shooting a lot of .22 has helped with my fundamentals such as trigger pull and sight picture without breaking the bank. I do recommend the Ruger mark 3 just for aftermarket upgrade ability, proven reliability and ruggedness, heavyweight all steel construction and feel. The Browning Buckmark also is right up there. One of the range employees owns a GSG 1911 and is very happy with that too. I've held that one and it feels like quality too. It's all metal and he said that it shoots well with good reliability. The Walther and Sig are "tacticool" but I doubt that you'll be able to get the trigger to feel like the Ruger or Buckmark.

One other thing, The range in Brea is rather small compared to On Target. It only has 12 lanes and sometimes when the La Habra or Brea PD uses the range for qualifying, they take up half of it, leaving only 6 lanes available for public use. The range is not very long and is only 50 feet max. They only allow pistol caliber rifles and no shot guns unless you're a LEO.

By the way, don't be discouraged by you shooting ability with a range rental gun. The sights may have been off and they probably hardly ever clean the things. I've rented a Ruger .22 that shot consistently low left and upon switching, found that it was the gun and not me. If you do go to the range in Brea, try to rent the Mark 3 target model as the one that shot low left was a standard taper barrel model with fixed sights.

Another option, keep your eyes out on when Calgun's has a group shoot. We have one coming up in Feb, http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=513195

Many calgunners will show up to these shoots and I'm pretty sure those guns will be there and many times if you bring ammo the owners of those firearms will be more than happy to let you have a little bit of trigger time with them.

I actually have Dark Paladin on facebook lol. I kinda forgot about that. I'll be looking forward to January's Monthly shoot and see if he'll let me try out his GSG. For the Rugers I can try OC indoor Range at Brea.

The funny thing about range pistols is that I actually managed to place every shot at where I aimed when I was in Vegas using a USP 9mm. I aim at the head I get head shots. But then it's like Les K said, the .22 will get me a lot more range time.

Well I am at on target about once a week and I have a 22/45 you are welcome to try as well as a 15/22.

Everytime we went my wife would rent a 22/45 because it is really the best entry level reliable 22 that we could find. Alot of the others as in mosquito, gsg, etc, all seem to be fussy with ammo and we shoot bulk ammo so I didn't want to have a picky range b*tch. So we got the 22/45 and I would reccomend it highly. You also need to think of what your long term goal is as the 22/45 has a 1911 grip angle so it'll help in that respect as well

I also have an xd9 that I'm starting to get pretty accurate with.

I like On Target as well, a nicer range than OC Indoor range, but it's so much more distance for me......I just can't go there all the time.

I think the 15-22 is available to rent at an indoor range in Rancho Cucamonga but that's probably pretty far from you. Eh, I can let you shoot mine at OC indoor some time.

Insight in Artesia has a good assortment of .22 pistols and rifles. Last time I looked they have several Ruger Mkiii, Browning buckmarks, S&W617. On the rifle side they have Sig 522, Ruger 10/22 and others.

I don't think you'll find anyone renting Gsg 1911, walters or sig Mosquitos because they are not reliable enough for the rental fleet.

The fact that every range has the Ruger Mark III really speaks for the Ruger. Reliability is going to be an important factor for me since I'm such a noob but then I want 1911 in .45 in the future so I'm considering the GSG.

OnTarget is only about 15 minutes away from me and that's the range I go most often with my little Marlin.
