Help a noob decide what 22lr rifle to get!

I am in the market for my first rifle.

I got my eyes on the M&P 15-22. What are your thoughts on this for a noob?
Are there any other rifles that is perfect for beginners?

Is $429.99 a good price for the M&P 15-22? I see it on Gallery of Guns. It should be about $500 OTD after tax, DROS, etc.

    Thanks

Do you prefer bolt action or semi-auto as well as a classic look or a tactical look?

For a first gun, you can't go wring with a 10/22 - right around $200, plenty of aftermarket products, easy to work on.

You can't beat the price on the marlin 795 good shooters out of the box.

I think a Henry Lever action is more fun than my auto loader. Never jams and shoots from Colibris to Aguila supermax flawlessly. At least try one.

Just cheap practice and target shooting.

A Marlin 795 would have been my second choice. Everyone's had them on sale and they are great first guns.

Lugar suggested a Henry - for some reason I only think of Henry's being +$600 guns, but after checking CTD - found a H001 for $219!! That's a great deal, and a good starter gun. I love levers, and the only downside I see with this is some guys hate them - so if you go out and buy one and hate it that sucks.

I second the Ruger 10/22, buy the basic version and build it up, it'll cost less then the M&P and you will have a crap load of fun. Thats what i did with mine and i love it, thee is nothing likke making your own tacticool rifle.......

Wow, you left us all an open field.

If i was plinking and having fun, I would get a Henry lever action.
If i was hell bent on accuracy Marlin, Savage, Ruger.
If i want something to match my AR them CMMG, Spikes.
If i was price contentious, Marlin 795 wins hands down.
If i like adding mods Ruger wins.

                        I'd got with a 10/22 or M&P15-22

I know you don't want a bolt action but I hear the CZ452/455 is a great rifle if you like shooting ironsites or with a scope, which is why its going to be my next rifle.

If you want an AR22, the M&P15-22 is the way to go IMO. $430 for the gun itself is a good price. I've never seen them lower than ~$465ish (everyday pricing).

Great, I think I will pull the trigger on the 15-22. Btw, what is that sexy gun on your signature?

MARLIN 795, I think the $25 rebate is still going until 12/31. Big5 always has it on sale. I've shot every brand of 22 ammo through mine and not a single issue and just plain fun. I take it with me on every range trip no matter what.
