22 Revolvers - New!

Hey all -

I am looking for a 22 Revolver, something that makes for a good
"first time shooter" experience.

Not too interested in 6" barrels (Security 6 and similar)
and am interested in a 4" barrel gun, which gets me to some possibles.

Thinking Ruger SP101 in 22:

It seems to be "on list" and was wondering if anyone has
shot this?

Any other suggestions here? Similar form factor and barrel length,
maybe a touch less in price. But the $$$ is not a show stopper.

Oh and did you know they are coming out with a Ruger LCR in 22?

Are you talking SA or DA? SA you have more variety. If I were starting over, I would get me one of the new 10-shot Rugers or Smiths (not sure if they are 8 or 10, but you get the idea).

I shoot a SW 617 in addition to my gsg and the mark II

Have you considered a Ruger Single-Ten? It's admittedly a bit slow to reload, but it's also incredibly soft shooting and the fiber optic sights really pop on indoor ranges. Every time I pull back the hammer I think to myself "Mmmmm...buttery smooth."

I have the sp101-22 and it is a great gun, but... I found the grip to be a tad too small so I bought the Hogue grips for it. It feels better but I haven't been back to the Range since I got the grips.

The LCR looks good but I don't think it has been approved for CA yet so it may take awhile.

The Ruger single sixes, or tens, are always a great choice if single action works for you.

SA revolvers don't need to be on list yeah, I know.

The Ruger-22 snubbie, LCR-22 is a curiosity thing - I have the LCR in 38sp because everyone should have a 38 snub, because they can be so difficult to shoot.

What i am looking for probably is DA, but with a hammer so you can fire it in a cock and fire SA mode. Not hammerless, thats for sure.

Probably prefer a tilt out cylinder, the single bullet load/rotate/load is slow and
when I use it with a beginner, want to teach them about clearing actions and all that.

SW 617 in 22? 4 inch barrel? I will have to look at that.
Any other possibles?

There will be a SP101 in 22 mag next year. It will be sent in for testing to be on the roster.
Not sure on the price, 22 version was $580?
The discontinued S&W kit gun, the expensive 617-$800?
The Heritage revolvers have had good reviews for single actions.

Single actions are cowboy type and double action the cyl swings out. IMO double action would be the best first gun. They are easier to shoot due to the frame style. A quality 22 should last close to a life time no matter the choice.

And about that "no 6" barrel" limitation....IMHO you will enjoy it more if you hit more, and you will hit more with a longer barrel. I've taught all 3 of my wives (they weren't simultaneous, thankfully) and both my sons how to shoot, and they all started with Ruger Mk 1 or Mk IIs, despite my protests. Shows how much they listened to the old man!

If Ruger submits the LCR-22 for roster approval, and if CA DOJ doesn't lag, then we might see it approved sooner than we think. They submitted the .357 LCR for roster approval and that was made available to CA residents fairly quickly.
