Snake shot?

I know it's kinda cool for them now but while walking the dogs the other day I was thinking about buying 22 cal snakeshot to put in my Beretta 21. Anyone have any experience with shooting them from a semi-auto? On another forum folks were saying them jam alot in semis. Only good for revolvers.

.22 rat shot will not cycle in semi autos and only has an effective range of about 10ft.

I have a mag for my Sig Mosquito filled with snakeshot but each round has to be cycled by hand.

I bought some snake shot for my .45 and it cycled fine. Not rimfire I know. The round I tested didn't really impress me. I shot a board at about 5 feet and I didn't feel confident it would kill snake. Not quickly at least, and it has a lot more payload than the .22 version.

I think the North American Arms single action 5 shot revolvers are the best suited for close in snake shot loads in a .22.

This is true. I ride (mountain bike) the trails 4-5 days a week and I had to hop my bike over 8 of them last year. So far I've seen 5 this year. I do have to say that as much as I ride the trails, I've never seen one in the winter. But I'm in San Jose... so quite possibly you guys may have a bit of a warmer winter than us.

Watch where you step. I see the stupidest behavior with weekend warriors and letting their children walk in the brush. Off leash dogs are also at high risk. It's also very annoying when I have to yield to equestrians and they expect me to just stop and step down anywhere.

I don't kill snakes, but people usually just toss a heavy rock onto them. I just stand clear of them (out of striking distance), and throw rocks until they crawl away. They keep the rodent population down.

You must ride by Stevens Creek park and dam. I've seen plenty of snakes all year round up there..
And just a heads up horses are sometimes spooky animals that don't like bicycles much. We don't expect you to drop into a bush but to at least follow the park rules.

I ride Santa Teresa County Park and lay down 60-100 miles a week through those trails - I have been riding there for many years. When it comes to rules of the park, equestrians and MTB'ers have their fair share of idiots, I not being one of them. Both destroy the trails when they don't follow the rules, especially when they have to close them down due to weather.

STCP is a special place to me - I guess it's a "place of prayer" in a sense. I absolutely hate it when people don't respect the land.

Back to OP: I don't know if I'd fire a gun in the county park. I think the hassle alone by neighbors and park rangers is enough deterrent to just do what I've been doing all along. I could only imagine Rangers drawing guns on me because of a 911 call about somebody with a gun on the trails. I've seen SJPD pull up with a small army for less than that. California, huh?

Ive never had the pleasure of riding there. I do agree there are a select few that always give the rest of us a bad name on both sides. Any trails that allows us to use them is a place to be respected.

Back on topic. I did try some shot out of my Jc Higgins and it did cycle at all. I havent tried them on pests yet but im not sure it would do well either.

With semi autos they may not cycle well. Also, you run the risk of that thin plastic cover busting, releasing the bb's everywhere with the chance of locking up your gun completely. For some guns it may be pretty difficult to get those out. God forbid it ever happens in one of my Rugers. Just a warning

So called "snake shot" in a .22 will- IMO- do nothing more than irritate any decent sized rattler. Most fun I've had with snake shot was shooting those big multi-colored flying beetles out of the air one late summer afternoon. . . so much fun we had to go back to the store for more snake shot. Range approx. 10 ft. (at best) from a double-action revolver. . . and then sometimes it only pissed the beetles off.

.22 snake shot are fairly rugged. I've go some that have gone camping in my fishing kit with me for decades and there is no sign of them coming apart. I wouldn't worry about the shot getting loose in you pistol. That being said, .22 shot are not real effective. I have used .38 and 9mm shot shells to kill many snakes. I've never killed one with the .22

They are real fun to shoot unopened cans of carbonated soad with.
