    CMMG .22 upper questions

(skip to the bottom for the actual questions)So this evening I saw the price of a Marlin .22 and thought I should just buy one for the GF to have at the house at that price. But she likes my 10/22 alot, more so than the 795, then I thought well if she is going to have something at home for self defense it might as well be scary looking(the scary, more it looks like a high powered EBR the better). I know the whole .22 to small for self defense thing, thats been rehashed over and over so don't want to get into that.

So after looking at 10/22's I was thinking she really likes a vertical grip and collapsible stock. But I hate the big rail on the SR-22 that has the huge cutouts in it(looks stupid to me). So I went cruising for other stocks, and non of them had real metal buffer tubes and interchangeable grips(Cause I know if at some point I put tan on my AR she is going to want tan on her gun etc etc).

Since I have an extra lower laying around the house I looked at dedicated .22 uppers for her. I went from a cheap marlin to thinking about building her a whole AR-22 lol, morale of the story being don't think lol

    So my questions are.
    1. How reliable are the CMMG uppers, does anyone have one and how well does it function
    2. do you use a regular buffer spring.
    3. Does it have a standard delta ring so you could pop in say a magpul handguard?

    1. The CMMG is the most reliable system I have tested. The options are something no one else offers. I highly recommend the stainless. It's well worth the extra money.
    2. I recommend leaving the buffer and spring in. It helps stabilize the BCG.
    3. The upper is built out of standard AR parts minus the BCG and barrel. Yes, you can use whatever hand guards you would like.

Got mine recently through Dave and am obsessed with this little toy. Here is mine with a Centurion Arms 10" free float rail.

I like mine very much, I've found high velocity functions best.

My intent buying the CMMG upper was to duplicate the XM177 (GAU) I carried yaers ago overseas. Along those lines, I removed the M4 type handguard and popped on the thin style. I added a slipover flash hider, the Vulcan (or is it Hesse?) looks best, I think. I removed the plastic guard at the rear of the ejection port and replaced that "half cover" on the ejection with a regular one. I added a gas tube just for looks, not having one pass between the HG and receiver is noticeable, I added a cold rolled pint to the GB post and replaced the plastic forward assist with a conveentional one with spring. I added a bolt on carrying handle on the flat top to finish.

I would like to see a picture of it.

Deviljon, Your Centurion Arms hand guards look great on there. I have not tried those yet.

I like the C4 rails a lot. The finish is very nice and it has a smoother feel to them compared to the Midwest Industries I had before. Highly recommend them and planning on picking up another one for my BCM mid-length AR.

Ours runs beutiful..Its a Sierra model.Has all the bells and whistles, stainless Bolt assembly, forward assist,BHOA..The handguards are MOE midlength,it came with standard carbine guards we never liked and also like the longer guards much better as to the feel of them when shooting the rifle, carbine lengths are just too short, stock is a Ergo F93 bought used and a Ergo ambi grip also bought used.Front sight is a Midwest Industries bought used at a very good price, rear is a Arms 40L bought cheap used too..Scope is a Nikon Prostaff and they are excellent scopes, mount is RRA cantilever bought used also.We also replaced the half dust cover with a normal one as the above poster did,the CMMG short one with the deflector is just not neccesary in my opinion,no problem with back blast or empty cases hitting you so I do not know why CMMG ever did that part of the design.Cheap bipod that we normally do not have mounted but use it occasionally. We also have a couple 50 rnd Blackdog Drums for it and they are really nice to have also. They are great little uppers..The lower is a Aero Precision we assembled..

Really the only thing we may do to it yet is add a Magpul AFG2 to the front...

If you purchase a CMMG you will be very pleased with it..We are anyway.I have owned many
22s over the years including 10-22,Nylon Remingtons and all kinds of others from pump actions to semi auto to bolt actions and this thing is a blast compared to all others.

I also have a CMMG stainless drop in conversion I use in my 5.56 upper and they are really nice too............Thanks

The deflector does help deflect the crud that comes out the ejection port. I have been hit with it many a time. But I shot a few years with AR .22's and never realized it until I used one with the deflector. That said, if I build my own, I bypass the deflector.

                    1) Very reliable... With quality High Velocity .22LR ammo & a stainless bolt it tends to be as reliable as any high end 5.56 upper (I.e., a Daniel Defense).

                    2) You dont HAVE TO and I've not noticed any difference with the buffer/buffer spring in compared to out. I'm personally not convinced it helps to stabilize the bolt that much, but it certainly does help a little. In the end, in most cases I'd rather just leave the spring/buffer in because I buy the PSA LBK's which come with them...

                    3) Already answered, but, yes...

The deflector is nice and it prevents getting the occasional face full of crud... Then again, you should have a nice pair of eye protection anyway that covers a good area around your eyes IMHO. Still, if you go fire a few thousand round and go wipe the deflector down... That's what would have been thrown into your face.

I also got my dedicated .22 upper from Dave. Outstanding guy to deal with by the way.

I have about ~900 rounds though the upper so far and have had only 3 magazine related problems. Im using my friends old BDM mags as i went way over budget with my build....
