    Ruger 10/22 upgrade questions

So when someone buys a Ruger 10/22, then starts to upgrade it, what is left that is original? Say they buy a new stock, new trigger unit, new barrel. What is left that was original? Would you be able to make a Ruger 10/22 from just "upgrade" parts instead of buying one stock and upgrading it? And if so, how would this be registered with DOJ? What part(s) of it would be held the 10 days and what part is the serial number on?

    Thanks for the help guys.

The receiver that has the s/n on it. Kinda like a AR you have the lower and install everything else.

Thanks guys. So is that one piece something I can purchase by itself? Can I buy that, wait the 10 days, I'm assuming to pick it up and build my rifle around it?

There are companies that sell just the receiver and you have it sent to a FFL and you start with a blank slate versus having to buy a rifle to have a bunch of pieces your not going to use and have laying around. Just looking online theres some that are about $150ish up to $400ish, just depends on what you want.

What's the difference between a $150ish one and those up to $400?

Sorry I haven't done it nor the research to be able to compare. Either someone will chime in on that portion or check google and try to read some reviews. Some have 20 MOA rails built into the receiver, some look similar to the ruger receiver. I just purchased a complete rifle and changed what I wanted and sold my spare parts.

You can avoid getting a Ruger (and replacing everything on it but the receiver) by actually buying a Kidd Innovations custom rifle that has no Ruger parts. It is still a 10/22, but with high quality components (receiver, barrel, trigger group, stock, etc.) These are the"ultimates" that the guys at rimfirecentral love. Pretty much the state-of-the-art for a semi-auto .22LR rifle system.

I have a 10/22 that has nothing 'Ruger' on it. I also have a couple other 10/22's that are mostly original with some light mods (mostly trigger).

The main difference with those pricey receivers (or any of the pricey components) is that there's a lot more attention to detail in their manufacturing, therefore more accuracy hopefully as a result.

But let me say this, One of my stock 10/22's has $350 total into it and my custom 10/22 has over 3 times that into it. Is it 3 times more accurate? No.

When I first bought a 10/22, I couldn't figure out why people would put that mutch money into a $250 gun, or buy a gun and piece by piece make it NOT a Ruger 10/22.

I still can't explain it, but I like the stockers, and I like my custom. I don't plan on ever getting rid of either.
