cheap ammo, whats the point?

I bought a Savage MKII BV earlier in the year and did a pretty extensive ammo test. I found that the higher velocity stuff doesn't shoot as accurately. I've also learned that a supersonic bullet will wobble as it passes back to subsonic. Perhaps that could be a reason for the varience in accuracy. I know stingers are hyper velocity, but at 50 yards they shouldn't drop off that much. The Ruger 10/22T I had in AZ didn't like them much either. Talking patterns rather than groups. The Savage is my accuracy rifle, and I have a few other .22s that I use for general fun/hunting. I guess my conclusion is find what works at your price point, and buy a bunch of it. If you have other .22s or are looking to obtain more, it may not perform in them.

I find CCI Blazer pretty damn accurate, most definitely enough for me and I do slow fire to try to get good groups. Definitely not buying a brick of ammo to shoot dirt at haha.

I do pretty good with a box of the 555 Winchester. My errors come from me not being steady. Error on the shooter side, but I'll get better.

Speaking of CCI Blazer Ammo.....Big 5 has it on sale right now for $16.00 for a box of 500. Seems to be a really good price and I've never had an issue with them with my rifles and handguns.

I bought a 500 pack at Ammo Bros in Ontario on the 14th and the sticker price was $15 It wasn't in their flyer, maybe it was on sale? I usually buy 525 packs and the non-sale price is $20-22, I believe.

Oh they are shooting bulk ammo . Just contact Eley and see how much you have to buy to arrange a batch testing,They(those guys) are buying by the batch and lot number and someone else is usually picking up the tab.

the most expensive .22 ammo i can find is ELEY match, at about $.27 per round. i use wolf for about $.11 per round, and i see many people using federal bulk which comes to about $.04 per round.

what gets me is that the people using federal bulk are also bench resting their guns and using scopes. why?

i can see using bulk ammo if youre just going to throw as many rounds as you can, as fast as you can, at a tree stump or something, but why even attempt to shoot bulk ammo accurately? i did a small ammo comparison, and winchester grouped at about 6in at 50 yards, while wolf is at about the size of a dime, or smaller.

i understand that .22 is finicky with different guns, but the same people i see shooting bulk from bench rest are "grouping" like 8-10 inches at 50yds. so why not use better ammo?

if you are bench resting to see what your gun is capable of, you should be using good ammo to eliminate variables. if you are off hand shooting to see how good you are, you should be using good ammo to eliminate variables.

why even waste the money of going to the range if you arent there to improve you or your gun?

sorry, sort of a rant, but i would also like to know if im missing something and there actually is some benefit to buying the cheapest ammo i can find? (besides saving $35 on 500 rounds of ammo)

I do better than 8-10 inch groups at 50 yards(much better) with cheap federal bulk ammo out of my 10/22, so whoever you saw getting that had something else very wrong.

as for why I use it, because I am having fun, not obsessing over getting the tightest group possable, and because if I want maximum accuracy out of my rimfire i'll use my .17hmr, the .22lr is for shooting a lot, cheap.

Because it is an enjoyable diversion. Sometimes you just need to have fun.

Free outdoor range + cheap rifle + cheap scope + cheap ammo = a day at the range with a total cost of $20 or less.

Besides, at 49, there isn't much I can do to improve my eyesight and the scope combined with a basic rest makes it easier to hit things.

At 48 my vision isn't all that good either, that black spot gets fuzzier everyday. I can't complain too much though because I was making 6 inch groups at 100 yards with my 10/22 and open sights. Not bad for fuzzy shooting.

But I digress...

I like to bring my guns to the range, shoot, take a break, talk to people, listen to the RM yell at noobs. Most of the time, with me anyways, I just want to get out and shoot my guns at some targets.

maybe it's just me but if i'm spending .27 a round i'm going to be shooting centerfire ammo.

i use federal bulk since most of my rimfire shooting is done at appleseed targets at 25 meters. further out than 50 i stick to my 5.56

8-inch group at 50 yds with 30 rounds of Federal bulk pack is my goal...with an offhand pistol.
CCI Blazer seems to shoot much more consistently than similarly priced Federal bulk pack in rifles though.

I think the OP's OP shot himself in the foot with the 6" @ 50 statement. Match shooters ought to shoot a single .22 hole at 50 meters with the ammo the OP uses.

I enjoy aiming for and pulverizing chips of clay pigeons at 100 yards with a Marlin 925 using Federal bulk, Winchester bulk and even *gasp* Remington GB's (although I'm not buying any more of those, no need to get my fingers "golden").

With a box of 550, I can shoot all day for $18 rather than shoot 66 rounds and go home.

@ $.27/round, I can be shooting my .308 .223 or 45 ACP reloads and still shoot twice as much as the OP.

On occasion I'll pay attention to another shooter but usually it's somebody who knows what they're doing....just sayin'...

As for cheap .22 I use it all the time. I don't really care that it doesn't group as tight as match ammo. That's not what I'm working on.

because i dont go for purely just shooting a small hole in the paper......

id rather shoot 2,000rds of 22lr for $80, than 2000 rds of 22lr for $540.

its a 22. it used for shooting steel and small critters.
i like to sit back in my chair with a tasty beverage and plink at empty cans and steel plates with my 22lr and BS with friends and have a good time.

I agree ^^^ there are plenty of rifles to shoot that costs $.27 to unlimited $$$. I just like to go have a relaxing time shooting cans and ground targets with friends.
