Sig 522 or GSG 5?

I am looking at getting one or the other of these and am leaning towards the Sig as of now. Those of you that have owned one or both can you share the pros and cons?

From what I understand the Sig is a better gun out of the box. I'm just looking for a good plinker that will eat whatever .22LR I put in it.

Add the SW M&P 15-22 to the discussion too if you wish.

I have Sig 522 and so far, it has been trouble free.
I have about 500 rounds through it and no troubles so far.

Before I fired it, I cleaned it thoroughly and lube all the "right" places.
Also, I only used CCI Mini-Mag.

Only a few minor complaints so far:

1. Folding stock doesn't stay folded.
2. Magazines that I have used (Mad Dog magazines) sometimes sticks in the mag well and doesn't drop free.
3. Before I bought this rifle, I examined several Sig 522 and passed on them. I noticed that several rifles didn't have the barrel aligned/centered properly. (I know that it sounds strange but you don't have to have special tools to make this observation. You can simply look at the barrel and how it is put together with the rifle to notice this.)
4. It's heavy for 22LR rifle.

Even with all these minor complaints, I am happy with the rifle.

I had Sig 522 and recently got a GSG 522. I honestly like the Sig a lot more. I experienced multiple jamming with bulk ammo for the GSG and never had any issue with Sig. Secondly, I think Sig is little more accurate too.

Thanks for the replies guys. It looks like my thoughts on the Sig being the better rifle are correct. Anyone know who has the best deals on these in the Bay Area?

I had a GSG-5. Key word "had."

Although I don't regret buying it, I'm glad it's gone. It's neat-o, but it wouldn't work with the cheap bulk .22 ammo. I think a gun should be able to use any name brand ammo.

I had a gsg 5 that had no problem eating bulk ammo...and it would shoot it pretty accurate for being bulk ammo too.

I sold it because i wanted a more "real" gun instead of a pot metal gun. Which is one of the main weaknesses of the gun.

The sig 522 is better just for the fact that its a real firearm made with real metal parts (except the lower is polymer)...not to mention accurate and reliable.

Though save yourself some money and get the version with quad rails. The sig comes with cheapy a** furniture and you will want to probably change the butt stock and forarm (if you dont get the quad rail version)

Get the Sig. Just DROS it and I can't wait! Went shopping for scope and accessories at Midway while on a 10 day wait. I also have the MP 15-22. Great rifle! Same operation as the big brother AR 15.

I've put about 10000+ rounds through mine with cheap federal ammo, american eagle and cci. works with everything and had only a few FTE due to the ammo. I've even taken it to 400 yards! 300 yards is pretty easy. Sig owns any .22 out there.

My Sig522 has a nice 2 stage-like trigger and is more accurate at longer distances compared to my S&W 15/22. However, I prefer the 15/22 because of how much it replicates an AR, both in manual of arms and its ability to be accessorised. IMO, the AR has superior ergonomics compared to the 522 and being able to modify it doubles the fun value. With the Sig 522 the accessories are limited, most frustrating are the limited options of iron sights as well as optic height mount possibilities.

You may find some old threads on various forums of both rifles having problems when they first came out, but I think all have been resolved now, for at least a year by both companies.

Both my Sig and S&W have been extremely reliable with Federal, CCI Blazer, and Winchester bulk. The only failures either to feed, fire, or eject, have been all attributed to the usual 1-3 bunk rounds in a brick. However, there have been two surprizing occasions that the 15/22 ran through a whole brick of Federal with out a single problem.

I've dealt with CS with both companies and they've both been excellent. With the S&W, I had a mag that broke during the 1st shooting session, they sent replacement with no charge. With the Sig, mine was from the 1st batch, and needed a bolt upgrade, Sig's CS sent me the necessary upgraded parts and eventually even re-timed the rifle's canted gas block totally free of charge.

IMO, both the Sig 522 and S&W 15/22 in their current form are the two best tactical 22lrs to choose from. However, if you're really into ARs the 15/22 will probably the gun for you.

I own a 1st gen GSG-5.
It's a fun plinker and has been reliable.

However, I recommend getting the SIG 522.
It's the better firearm. More accurate and more reliable.

dLove my GSG. Winchester ammo all day long. Doesn't have the ar look. Great plinker. If you want a hunting or target rifle, then buy one. If you want a tacticool 22, get a gsg
