GSG 1911 First Impressions / Questions

So i picked up a GSG 1911 from turners on saturday. We gave it the quick once over and proceeded to blast 600 rounds of federal bulk pack 22lr hollowpoints through it.
NO PROBLEMS! This thing rocks!

Other than ~40 dollar magazines, this thing is a steal. Very impressed with it. Could be a little more accurate (i hear changing the front sight and using a real fitted barrel bushing do wonders - we were consistently low/right).

Impressions: Impressed! As long as it lasts, it'll be a great gun.

Questions - after putting 6hundy down the tube, i took it apart and cleaned it up.
I notice the the slide has some galling/wear at the slide stop. Pretty typical on these softer metal slides i take it? I'll start 'slingshotting' the slide instead of using the slide release and letting it bang forward.

Grease or Oil?
I took it apart and cleaned it - noticed it had some factory grease in some locations. I typically run just oil - should i be running some sort of gun grease also? if so, where should i use grease?

BTW - a set of hogue grips and this thing is phenominal!

Nice. I love mine. First time out i went through a brick, its easy [on my wallet] taking my friends too.

I picked up my extra mags from GSG5Tactical.com when they still had flat 2.99 shipping, so I got mine for a little less than $40 total.

Get to finally pick mine up today! Won't get a chance to test it out until Wednesday. Glad I bought an extra mag a while back for $31.00 shipped ... wish could have bought more.

Turners in orange had a stack of spare mags. 33.99 each., could only swing 1 spare for now lol

I'm really curious about the grease vs oil question... factory had some grease in places, but i went through mine with oil.

I always use Tetra gun grease in my 1911's (and in my polymer guns for that matter) on the slide, and then clean up any excess grease after racking it a few times. Nothing against the oil, but I just like knowing that the grease is in there working rather than oil dripping or drying out.

I see some wear on my GSG slide, but it looks more like the black coating finish is gone and you have bare metal on metal, like you would on a stainless slide & frame 1911.

Just keep it well lubricated and it'll run fine.

So you guys are shooting regular bulk .22lr? I'm asking 'cuz I was thinking about getting one of these but I saw the specs said they shoot "High-Velocity" .22lr, and I got kinda' turned off.

They'll cycle with any ol' brick ammo from WallyWorld?

I tried CCL Blazer 40 gr, Aguila High Velocity 40gr, Fiocchi 40gr, Federal Champion 36gr, Aguila High Velocity 38gr, Fiocchi 38gr, Winchester 37gr, Federal AE 38gr. HV Copper Plated Hollow Point, Winchester 40gr. Super X High Velocity RN Ammo... Mostly high velocity and some standard velocity and they all feed fine in mine.

I must have shot over 1000 rds on the first range session and only had 1 FTF because of dirty chamber plus soild lead point with no copper plated with CCI Blazer ammo. There were a magazine related issue that resulted in the first round pointed up and got stuck in between the barrel and the slide. I blamed the magazine and me because it only happened to the first round and usually was when I forced the 11th round into the magazine.

I would use high velocity ammo for the break in and after that, you can use standard velocity ammo provided the gun is well lubed.

Federal bulk packs work just fine as do the blazers.

Watch for coupon sales...

Midway USA had a discount for any purchase and they had stock of the GSG 1911 .22LR magazines. I bought 9 of them with a discounted price below $30 each. Just used them at the Monday Night Shooting League. Can't believe how much heavier they are when compared to the S&W 41 magazines.

The RO loved looking at the gun, and couldn't believe the price was the same as a conversion kit.

Think of how much money you are saving compare to shooting 45acp

Last range session I spend 5+ hour at the range and spend $50 to $60 tops on .22LR for over 1000 rds. Then I shot 50 rds of 45 in may be 10 minutes and already cost me $16. I overspend on the .22LR just because I bought whole bunch of ammo back when I wanted to test out which HV ammo work best for my 22 conversion kit for the AR-15. If you just shoot Federal bulk or CCI Blazer then the saving is more.

This is how I justify to my wife that I am still saving money

picked up another bulk pack... but this time i'm gonna try remington golden bullet JHP's.... wally's was out of federal. Big deal, an extra buck to try the Remingtons....

I handled one of these at a local FFL recently. The weight was a bit off-putting compared to a .45 1911, but otherwise I liked what I saw.
