Ruger 10/22 extractor problem

I was at the range the other day and my friend was shooting my 10/22 when I noticed something seem to fly out of my rifle. I look closely and it was a spring that I'd never seen from stripping the gun down. After doing a quick check up of the FCG, I didn't see anything wrong so he continued to fire and it continued to work fine. I got home and stripped it down for cleaning (good ol' Remington .22 ammo got it real dirty) and saw that the extractor was missing! No claw, plunger or spring! I have no idea how this could have happened because I take damn good care of my firearms, especially my first born. I sent Ruger an email so I'll get a response in a few days, but I am mystified at what happened. Kinda annoyed that I have to deal with getting everything replaced (I couldn't find the plunger for the extractor, so that should be fun -_-) and I hope my rifle's ok. Blah.

This would be a good time to upgrade to a VQ or Kidd extractor. They are pretty cheap and work very well at grabbing stubborn brass. Maybe your old spring broke and that allowed the extractor to work itself free?

If you had a case rupture it will sometimes spit out the extractor and plunger/spring come flying out. Some of the aftermarket extractors come with new spring and plunger. Make sure to clean the chamber area well.

Thanks guys. Yea, I don't mind getting a new extractor assembly, I'm just having a little trouble finding a plunger to go along with it. The spring that I saw fly out of my rifle was probably the extractor spring and it had a pretty big bend in it so I'm guessing that's one reason why it went to poop

Some aftermarket extractors come with spring and plunger. It should be available from anyone who sells extractors. Check Brownells, Numrich, Midway and Volquartsons someone will have them.

I wouldn't even waste your time contacting ruger. Just go buy the parts and you'll be better than new.
