    Russian "JUNIOR" .22 LR Ammo

I was at a friends house last night and he brought this stuff out. Said he bought it in 1985. Junior on the box, states on the carton 'these cartridges are designed for initial training in shooting and hunting'. Steel case, wax bullet, round nose and almost black in color, it has an upper case V as a headstamp. I've never seen these until now. I might fire some tomorrow if I get a chance. Tell me what you know about this stuff, thanks.

Yeah, late 80s-early 90s Russian steel case 22lr ammo---have a couple of boxes in my collection---never really caught on---some folks say steel cases are hard on barrel---I think I only shot 50 rds thru my 10-22---worked with no problems, but then that rifle eats most everything.

I have a case I bought back in the day. The box color is yellow. -g

I have a case of this, but it is not too great. The casings have stuck in the chamber in all 3 of my 22s. Semi, bolt, and lever action. Nostalgia only for me.

That's not a V, it's a Cyrillic U, which stands for 'uchebniye patrony" - training ammo. I had some of that stuff way back when, it's way inconsistent, and some bullets were barely seated in the casings, you could easily pull them out.

i have shot those - they suck, shoot them in a revolver easier to pull out if/when stuck. very inconsistent at long range but they do still shoot
              I mainly shoot .22lr, 9mm,45 acp, 357 & 38, 12G, 7.62x39, .308, .223/556, 7.62x54r, 300 win mag, 8x57

I have a few boxes of the junior 22s I am not sure where I got them but they have shot fine to just plink with. Keep in mind I have not tried to take game with them or shoot 600yd

I shot some of it last weekend that my GF's dad gave us. It worked ok out of my 10/22 with reasonable accuracy at 25 yards. (.5 to .75 inch groups) It did have one casing fail to eject and a couple light strikes on the steel case. In my Rem 513 it shot quite well with groups under .5 inch but I had more problems with light strikes. Also that rifle is heavy enough that there were a couple shots that I was afraid had squibed since the ammo was pretty low powered and inconsistent. Personally I don't like steel case ammo on principle out of good barrels so I don't think I'll be shooting it out of either of those two rifles again. If I found it shot well in some other plinker I would use it.

Do you regularly shoot .22lr that distance?

But seriously I was just making a point that this ammo is low power and not that accurate but I have not had any issue with Junior ammo as long as it is not shot with a "match ammo" expection for performance

I have a brick or two in my collection and that's where it will stay. Dirty and inconsistent...

                          JAGACIDA,

I tried to shoot some of this stuff from my Marlin bolt action rifle and the spent cartridge got stuck and the extractor couldn't remove it from the chamber. Since then I never shoot ANY 22long rifle Russian ammo!!!!

Take my advise and just don't bother unless you want to risk getting the same issue.

Noted. I have a single shot Savage that gets all the reject ammo, but this sounds like it's even too crappy for it.
Thanks for all the legwork guys.

Like any firearm they can be picky. I have shot a couple thousand rounds through my Ruger MKII 6 7/8 and they worked fine.
Like the statements above, they are steel cased but very lubed that least mine were. I always have a GI cleaning brush handy. Just brush out some of the lube and unburnt powder and good to go. I just used them for plinking.
If they work your in luck, other wise like some its a collectable just because.
                              Good Luck and Happy Shooting!
