Cleaning a 10/22

Sorry, this is probably a dumb question but I just wanted to check with everyone before moving forward with cleaning a Ruger 10/22 I picked up today.

I watched several videos on YouTube and most instruct to take the whole gun apart to clean it. Are there "quicker" ways to clean a 10/22? Also I was reading online and someone recommended that if I wanted to clean the barrel without taking it off, to just stick the cleaning rod down the "front" of the barrel.

Use a bore snake for the barrel. For quick, you can pull the stock off and blast out the action with an aerosol type cleaner. But really, 10/22 come apart so easy, just do it right.

yeah, i disassemble mine and clean it every time. they are very easy to take apart, even to the component level, total time to disassemble and reassemble is about 3 mins.

Like mentioned above, I use a bore snake, alot more easier. But I still remove the bolt and clean inside.
Its easier once you get the hang of it and do it a few times.

and install it yourself, youll learn the internals of the gun well, and be able to take it apart and clean it more easily, plus youll get rid of the crap trigger on the ruger.

i went with this one because the VQ was out of stock at the time, it has more pre travel than i care for, but its still really nice, and way way better than the stock trigger

How would you use a boresnake with FL? Put the FL all over the boresnake and pull it through?

is it any different than normal CLP? i normally put CLP on just the brushes of the bore snake and run that through a few times

Eventually you are going to have to give it a good cleaning so might as well start practicing now. You'll notice that it is very easy to take apart a 1022.

You can spray some cleaner on the boresnake and pull it through but eventually you are going to have to run a patch through your barrel. I run a boresnake when I'm feeling lazy, but I take apart my 1022 and give it a good cleaning after several range trips. I use a otis cleaning cable to run patches through my barrel. Plus I don't have to take the barrel off

My advise is to use a bore snake to quickly clean the barrel and chamber. If you really want to clean the action you'll need to remove the stock. The trick is to make sure that the safety is in the middle position when you seperate the two or you'll end up with idiot marks on the stock. Another thing to pay attention to is the torque on the take-down screw or bolt. If it is not re-ssembled with the same torque lbs. you POI (or zero) will change. Once the action and barrel are out of the stock you might as well remove the trigger group and bolt and clean it all. It's a pretty simple process and should not take you very long. YMMV, but this it what I've always done with mine.

Once attached, you never have to take the barrel off. Just drop the trigger group, pop the bolt out, and give it a wipe down and re-oiling. Bore snake or patch worm is the best method for the barrel

I would read the instructions that came with your rifle and use that info to clean your 10-22. The reality is it doesn't need much to clean your rifle cuz the only important areas are the trigger assemble which comes out in a unit by pushing out two pins and just clean the face of the bolt using a wet patch and a quick scrubbing of a brush. Total cleaning time should only be no more than 15 minutes of your time including a litle oiling of the action. Twice per year you can clean the bore using a snake or an ordinary cleaning rod and solvent. Just be careful NOT to ding the crown on that.
