    How am I doing?

    So I got a Marlin 795 a few weeks ago and have been to the range a few times. The first time out I only managed a 1 inch group from 7yds using a the stock sights. Second time, the best I could do was a tiny bit better. The third time, I got a Simmons .22 MAG (3-9x32) and the best I managed to do was about an inch at 25 yds, but that was if I took my time on every shot, 2 inches if done as fast as I can acquire the target (around 1 every 2 seconds). All were 10 shots standing employing a hasty sling using a cheap nylon Allen sling. So my question is how am I doing? Also, any tips on how to get better?

    standing at 25 yd 1 inch is pretty good if you ask me. With support you should be able to group an inch at 75 yd. fun stuff

      Me and my bros. are generally decent shots with the .22 single shot

      However the 30-06 gets heavy and has a kick :P

        Standing with a sling using a scope, pretty good for 25 yds. Now practice and you'll get better. As for me, standing with a scope and sling at 25yds I'd be lucky to hit a 12" pie plate, just not my thing. Good shootin', use as small a target as you can and you will undoubtedly do even better.

          Thanks for the encouragement guys, as long as I'm not horrible I'll keep doing it because it is really fun.

            Have you been to an Appleseed?
            If not you should look into it. I just finished building an LTR to take to a future appleseed.

                Pumped by all the encouragement I got, I went out to the range again but stopped by Walmart to get some ammo, they ran out of the Federal 36gr I bought last time so I got the Winchester 555 white box. Shot about 200 and no FTFs or FTEs, I did get one dud. By the way, how does one dispose of duds?

                I'm a little disappointed because my average grouping got bigger. Beginner's luck? Off-day? One way to find out, shoot more! I did manage an 8 shot inch long hole with the other two about an inch away. I'm also struggling with scope creep and thinking about getting either http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A7NGOO or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002TUSJVQ anyone use either one of these? Comments on them?

                  On the scope mounts: 1st one is too large, 2nd one I have on a Marlin 60 and it stopped the scope creep and has been on the rifle for a year.

                  Disposing of DUDs: Most ranges have a "dud" box, at least mine does. Before disposal try reloading it in the rifle and firing again. Sometimes they go off on the second or third try. Inexpensive ammo does this sometimes due to an uneven distribution of the primer in the rim.

                  If your WalMart has them, I suggest you try Federal Automatch. Better accuracy than Federal or Winchester bulk, at least in my rifles.
