    10/22 problem

Hello all. I've been shooting my ruger alot lately and the last time I was shooting I reloaded the mag and tried to load the first round when...nothing happened. The bolt is "stuck". It'll wiggle a little bit but it wont push forward to load the first round. Anyone had this happen? I tried to google it but to no avail. Any thoughts? Its just my luck, I've got an Appleseed shoot in 2 weeks. TIA!

Bolts usually get stuck back due to one of three problems:
    1. Too-long scope mount screws sticking down into the receiver (did you install a scope?)
    2. Bolt stop pin missing (or you are using one of those plastic buffers that has failed?).
    3. Bent / damaged recoil spring guide rod (rare).

Other odd possibilities: trigger group incorrectly installed into receiver, bolt stop binding or ejector not in correct position.

I do have a scope on it but its been on since day 1. I have not taken anything apart. Could something have been broken? Its weird, went from shooting fine all day to this between mag changes.

how long has it been since you cleaned it? you may have a build up of "crud" between the bolt and the receiver.

Maybe a silly question.Sound though as it has not been taken apart and cleaned. If you have never done it,it is fairly simple. When you get it apart soak everything good with solvent.Use a old tooth brush and a couple tooth pick for small areas to scrub.I use Kano Kroil.Hose it out with a can of break cleaner.Cover anything you do not want the solvent ruining, including your optics.Lube up with dri moly. Then try it.All of my 22s are the foulest shooting things, due to the crud the ammo throws off.10-22s are the worst of them due to I suppose tolerances.Got to love them though.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine with a different semi-auto. Bolt buffer was broken into 3 pieces and jammed the bolt. Suggest you remove the action and inspect the bolt/spring/trigger group for possible cause. Just don't try to force the bolt.

Im in san diego. No I haven't cleaned it yet. It is probably dirty. Would that alone cause the bolt to jam like that? I was told to clean it once the accuracy dropped off. It was shooting dead nuts right before this happened

Lots of crud can foul any gun.
I clean my 10/22s every 500 rounds or so.

Clean the barrel when accuracy drops off but as its a blowback semi-auto the action must be cleaned more often. CLP works great. Usually a dirty action will cause failures to feed, stovepipes, failures to eject. Yours sounds like a more serious problem with the bolt jammed but start with cleaing and you will probably find the problem and you'll get to know the rifle better.

It was passed on to me from my grandpa. I haven't taken it apart yet, and have no idea when the last time he did. Ill try to find a youtube
video when I get home from work as i have no idea how to break it down. Is there anything that breaks to cause this?

Nothing usually breaks on a 10/22.
Extractors wear out, springs get tired, but usually there is nothing that would break that would cause the bolt to jam.

Could be that it has never been fully disassembled and cleaned properly, in which case any number of things might be at fault.

I too would take it down and clean it.
Nothing too difficult in cleaning a 10/22
