    Marlin 925 + appleseed = success

So let me start by saying if you haven't attended an appleseed event, you need to ASAP. I recently bought my first rifle, a marlin 925 bolt action. I took it to the range a few times and thought I could shoot reasonably well until I attended an appleseed event.

Now the rifle, it is a 100% unmodified bolt action with open sights and a usgi sling. I picked it up at my local gun shop brand new for about $100. I have over 2000 rounds of cheap walmart bulk ammo without a single failure of any kind. You cant say that about many other 22's out right now. Pic below:

Also attached my appleseed redcoat target 300 yards reduced size for 25 meter shooting. Not too bad for a cheap 22 with cheap bulk ammo and far from good shooter.

Now I have to go back and try to get that elusive rifleman patch, many say it can't be done with a bolt action with open sights but I'm up for the challenge...

Nice! Don't let anybody be a downer on the open sights bolt action rifle. I've seen a few folks make Rifleman with similar rifles. I've also seen someone shoot a 217 with a single shot .22. Perseverance is all it takes!

Sorry for my ignorance but isn't a 300yard target at 100 yards a..... 100yard target?

I know the .22 don't go out that far (300yards) but i'm guessing it's the lessons that you learn on how to shoot/sight in that are important?

Do NOT get me wrong, I want to go there with my .22 as well... I'm just a bit confused

        sorry...

Anything that makes me a better shooter i'm all up for learning.

Where did you go for this Appleseed?

Nice shooting at 100yards though.. impressive with a .22 and open sights.

The target is set at 25 meters and it is a reduced size target used to simulate the upper torso of a person at 100, 200, 300, 400, and a head shot at 250 yards (each portion of the target gets smaller as the distance increases). The picture I posted is the 300 yard section of the target.

If that still doesn't make sense, just go to an appleseed because they can explain all that sighting and MOA stuff better than I can. If it does make sense, go to an appleseed anyway. I went to the appleseed in Corona at raahauges range.

It looks like the target is shot from 25 meters. Roughly 75 feet.
I think that is because you can target replace and retrieve much quicker.

                Thanks

                I'll check it out.

My buddy suggested this Appleseed thing to me as he wants to go as well but I didn't get that far into reading it at work Friday.

                Sounds like fun.

Appleseed is definitely a great thing to go to if you're interested in becoming a better shooter, and interested in our heritage as marksmen.

For anybody interested, there's an event coming up on September 17-18 at Raahauge's in Corona, in which we'll be putting 210 shooters on the line. It's going to be the biggest Appleseed shoot ever, so get in on it if you can! I'll be there on Saturday as one of the instructors. It should be a great time!

wow I paid $175 for my bolt action plastic stock at big 5. I was stoked just to find the thing since I'd been looking around for it and hadn't seen anything.

That's a great price! I have been looking for a decently priced bolt-action. Guess I will watch the Bass Pro Shop sales.
