ATI GSG-5 failure issue - pic

I've had my GSG-5 for about 4 months now with at least 2000 rds through it. I'd say about 1 rd per 24 rd magazine has failed one way or another. I've always used Rem golden hollow points (I know, they sorta suck), keep my gun clean and lubed at all times, and have not changed anything lately.

I went to the range today and every 3rd rd (appx) did what you see in the pic. When the failures acurred, it was like a backfire where smoke was coming out anywhere it could in the receiver end. Also, it was blowing the backs of the shells off.

While trying to diagnose, I manually inserted some fresh bullets into the breach. About every 3rd rd was a very tight fit, but the other ones went in just fine. I'm assuming the ammo is the issue, but why would some of these be so tight all the sudden??? Any input is appreciated......

......I know, I should ditch the gold bullets. The same bullets work great in my 10/22 however.......

Wow, don't know why, but are you shooting outdoors right now in Havi? I shoot out there a lot, but not much during the summer months of July and August.

My guess would be the ammo. Have you tired any other manufacturers? Just looks like a bad batch to me.

Yes, outside in Havasu. Right now it's about 110, but our range has covers so the heat in the shade is do able. Besides, I have lived here 4 years now, so I'm used to it.

I'm guessin' ammo also, but I've never had this issue before with this ammo. I know it's not the best ammo, but it's never failed me like this. I will buy a box of something else and see how it goes.

I would take a good look in the chamber and scrub it out well- it almost seems it's not quite in battery if there is room for the casing to rip apart and gas to escape out the back. Or maybe so much crud in the chamber area that pressure is too high? Not good.

Those golden turds are crap. I used to have to buy them as they were the only thing that my Sig Mosquito would cycle, but little shavings of brass glitter and crud would gum up the works. I would have to open it up and scrub it with some oil and wipe it down several times a range trip. Thankfully it is broken in and now shoots CCI Blazers without a hitch so I am never buying the Remington junk again.

Soak the chamber, scrub well, buy some Blazers and give it another try.

RIP Kelev my sweet Lab (and avatar). The best dog in the known universe. Thank you for 14 wonderful years. I will see you again one day.

Switching from Golden Bullets has resolved many gun problems. The poor tolerances speak for themselves, some can drop in, others get stuck.

Edit, the chambers on 10/22's are also cut loose to aid in extraction as well as to prevent out of battery discharges; likely the reason why they feed okay in that rifle. As an aside, one way to improve the accuracy of a 10/22 is to set the barrel back and recut the chamber.

Diferent ammo and clean the chamber really well. Put a .25 cal brush on a cleaning rod and spin it in the chamber. Be very carefull when the case head seperates on a .22 like that, it usually leaves a bullet stuck in the barrel. Check your barrel for any rings if you inadvertently shot out a squib.

I had the same issue with a box of Walmart Federals in my colt .22, I cleaned it out, lubed it really good and used a different box. It must have had too much powder or something...

                    Update

                    Update:

So I cleaned the gun thoroughly to help rule out the gun. I filled 6 mags with 3 different ammos:

2 mags with the suspect Rem rounds
2 mags with a new box of Rem rounds
                    2 mags with CCI Blazers

The original suspect rounds in question STILL failed and performed the same as before.......every third round blew the rear out.

The new box of Rem (bought at the same time as the suspect box) worked fine.

The CCI Blazers also worked fine.

From this day forward, CCI Blazers will be my choice.

Also, I contacted Rem and they are paying for me to ship the two boxes back to them for evaluation.
