.22lr sub sonic rounds

Hello everyone,
I live in a rural area that is legal to discharge firearms, however I am backed up to a hillside and noise echos to the neighbors. I've shot my 10/22 with regular velocity rounds and have had no complaints yet but I know the neighbors can hear me shooting. Has anybody had any luck with sub sonic rounds? Id be willing to pony up a little more cash for ammo if it makes a noticeable difference in noise. I want to retain the shooting privilege and be as considerate as possible. Also, any other tips on being a good shooting neighbor? Thanks in advance!

CBs are great for low noise, they usually make more noise hitting the target then when actually fired. however they will not cycle an auto made for LR. revolver or bolt is the way to go. as far as your neighbors, invite em over to shoot and barbeque. free ammo and beer can go a long way....

The best way to achieve quiet shooting is a ruger 10/22 with a 1:9 twist barrel at 20 inches running the 60 grain subsonic rounds, increased power recoil spring. If you shot the 60 grain subsonic out of the factory 1:16 twist the bullet will tumble. Since you live in a legal to discharge firearms I would say save your money. The barrels, rounds, and modifications might not be worth it considering the mods are around $200 and with $200 you can buy tons of .22lr rounds.

Here is my ruger 10/22 subsonic. By the way the shooter is my friend, i'm holding the camera. Theres a jackass in the background trying to ruin the video by shooting at the sametime as we are shooting.

I use the CCI brand CB 22 Long "yard ammo", goes at 710fps according to the box. It is very quiet, and unlikely to bother anyone.

I shoot it from my factory-barrel/action Ruger 10/22. Once you learn where the bullet goes at what range it is accurate enough for plinking.

I tried some Remington subsonic that was about 1050fps. Not quiet, and expensive.

Screw the 60 grain SSS crap. There are plenty of 38-40 grain subsonic rounds that don't require any mods to your and cost about the same as any decent .22lr ammo. In fact, most "match" rounds are going to be subsonic. Anything, in the way of .22lr, marked "Standard Velocity" is usually subsonic. All that said, unless you are shooting them through a surpressor (you probably aren't one of the few in California who can legally own one here), they still make as much noise as a high velosity round minus the sonic crack.

If you are alright with manually cycling your action, you could use longs, shorts, long CB caps, CB caps, Short CB caps, BB Caps, or even Aguila's Super Calibres or Calibres. If you choose to go the calibre route (they are quiter than an air rifle), you should constantly check to make sure you don't get a squib. They can and do get stuck in rifle length barrels but, they are SOOOOOO fun to shoot that it's worth it.

I agree. The 60 gr. hits with a definite splat but needs a 1/9 barrel. Great in an AR .22 conversion.
I use standard velocity for cheaper quiet but I use a suppressor.
Remington subs are fairly quiet but extremly dirty.
I use CCI subs with my suppressor. Fairly quiet and very clean.

But I agree, the only thing you accomplish is loosing the somic crack.
You still have the blast noise with standard and subsonic.

Thank to everyone for the replies! I had no idea there were so many options. I bought a box of remington subs today but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. If the sonic crack is removed like some said here, that would be one less echo per shot. What are the requirements to have a rimfire suppressor here in Kali?

Seriously, someone will be along to tell you but from what I have seen, it's all but impossible to legally own a suppressor in CA for a civilian.

Why would rimfire type cartriges be any different than any centerfire, pinfire or even matchlocks? You have a noise that comes out of the barrel period. With supersonic ammo, you also have the sonic crack to deal with.

Well aren't there different laws for rimfire guns vs centerfire? I thought it might carry over into suppression. Just wishful thinking ...

+1 for the Aguila Super Colibri. Runs fine in my 10/22, manually cycling of-course. Makes air guns sound loud. Accuracy is kind of inconsistent but hey, what you expect for 500-600fps? Still fun as heck though. As others have said, always watch out for squibs with this kind of ammo, good news though is I haven't had one yet.

Super Calibe and Calibre are two different animals. They are both fun to shoot though.
