    CCI Mini Mag Silent Discharge

This is a new one for me.
While out shooting with a group of friends it became my H&R Sportsman's turn in the line up. I had 500 rounds of brand new CCI Mini Mags and let each of my friends put a few cylinders down range. My friend Dave had an injured hand and when it was his turn to shoot I assisted him reloading while he held the revolver. One thing about the Sportsman is that it ejects all 9 spent cases for you at one time. I pulled out 9 fresh rounds and began to load the cylinder. Because of the way Dave was holding the revolver I would lean the bullet on the edge of the cylinder's charge hole then slide it in. This is important because we both watched 9 rounds with bright copper jackets go into each of the 9 charge holes of the cylinder.

In 30 years of shooting I've never had a FTF with CCI Mini Mags or Stingers.

Dave fired 6 rounds and then on the 7th there was a silent fall of the hammer, the 8th round went off fine and then the 9th was just the sound of the hammer falling as well. I had Dave point the muzzle at the target for one minute and then hand me the Sportsman.

A few things were going through my mind, this was an old revolver and I wanted to see how hard the FTFs were struck by the firing pin, I planned on removing the FTFs and putting them in different charge holes to see if they would fire and finally, maybe I had my first two bad rounds of CCI.

All four of us stood over the Sportsman I as broke the action and caught the cases in my hand.... 9 spent cases. There was no shinny copper bullets left in the 7th and 9th cases. There was no lead stuck in the barrel. How did a bullet exit the barrel and not make a sound? Any sound?

All four of us heard and saw the same thing and for those of you thinking it.... I don't drink before or during shooting. The targets were clay pigeons with a dirt backstop so I couldn't confirm 9 holes in a target.

Thought I'd share as I've never heard of anything like that. Any ideas or similar experiences?

Bad ignition and just enough to get the round out of the barrel with enough force to not end up causing an obstruction? Although you still should have heard something.

When I was a kid I used to take the bullets out of the case, dump the powder and shoot the "blanks" so I know what just a primer sounds like. I can assure you the only audible noise was the hammer falling.

        I have to say I wouldn't believe it if I wasn't there.

I know, that's why I said it still should have been audible(although primer only with a projectile probably wouldn't be as loud as without, but still. And who the hell got to do that as a kid? I got in trouble for stacking up rolls of caps and smashing them with a hammer...).

Other than aliens teleporting your bullets and powder away, I really can't think of anything else. Even if the bullets were loose and somehow fell out, they wouldn't have left the revolver and just slid out of the barrel or something.

          Weird...

But a primer muffled by a bullet siting on top of it makes a lot less noise. I have a brick of the Aguila primer only 22 rounds and I can tell you that the hammer falling on my kimber makes more noise than the round going off.

you should have stopped on the first silent hit. if that thing had lodged the bullet in the barrel, you would have had a bad accident.

Had I been the one firing the weapon that is exactly what would have happened. I love that revolver, I get nauseous just thinking about it.

I wonder if that is it, I'll have to buy some of the Aquila primer only and see if it sounds the same.

You may wish to inspect the bore carefully to insure that it hasn't been bulged. This would not have been the first time that I have seen a squib pushed out of the barrel by a following round without any sort of catastrophic failure, especially in a .22LR.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Just took a peak to be safe, my lands and grooves appear uniform, all is bright and shinny.

How old were the rounds? How were they stored?

With the hot weather, it's possible that the bullet lube melted into the powder charge resulting in a lot of the powder not burning.

I'm careful in hot weather to store/transport my .22 ammo bullet down to avoid this.

I do not know they age of the ammunition as I have spent it all and discarded the packaging. They were however new to me and purchased from CVS the day of shooting. From the time of purchase to the time of the mystery shots the temperature remained in the mid 80s I would guess.
