    advice for a 10/22 project

I have a really old 10/22 in very good condition. I would like to do a build which will accomplish the following.
1)a good rifle for appleseed competitions
2)a good tree and ground squirrel rifle
3)a good rifle for range work
Is a .910 bull barrel 16" long too heavy for shooting offhand. Many of the stocks I see while beautiful appear to be for bench rest only.
I would appreciate any advice possible, most rifles I see here and in Rimfire Central appear to be for bench rest, specific barrels and parts would be appreciated.
    Thanks Bill

I'm still new at this whole thing but...

You definitely need a stock that has sling studs on it for appleseed shooting. Would you want to drill some holes in one of those super expensive match laminated stocks? Consider that when you're stock shopping.

I think the auto bolt release is pretty essential, too. When you're on a timer it really pays not to have to fumble with it.

If it's a really , really old 10/22 maybe it should be left orginal as a collector.
If it is beat and battered, then it does not matter.
Here's serial number / year list you can check out:

I would advise against the .920 barrel. Get an aftermarket sporter or a green mountain heavy taper. The .920 barrels are too dang top heavy and make the gun unbalanced. You will get the same accuracy out of a sporter. I have 3 with gm sporters, and one with a gm heavy taper.

I can post pics if you would like. Pm me

Ehh, the great thing about the 10/22 is that most of the parts are drop-in and you don't have to modified original parts if you don't want. He could get a new barrel, new stock, and drop in some new trigger parts easily to create a great rifle. And that's only if it's something special (like pre 1970). Just keep the original parts and it can always be put back to the factory configuration.

Do a Superstock build- classy and classic
buy another 10-22 for an Ultimate build
