    "Best" Dedicated .22LR Upper?

I'm totally new to the whole gun thing, but am looking to get a dedicated AR upper.

My limited research is leading me to a "fully loaded" CMMG Upper (I'm looking specifically at the Sierra 16" low profile GB).

I know Tactical Solutions and Spikes also make dedicated 22 Uppers, but I think the CMMG is considered as good/better...?

Would love to hear any all thoughts/opinion/comments/recommendations... I know "best" means different things to different people, but I'm looking for quality/accuracy/reliability over price (though price is, of course, meaningful in the overall analysis).

    Thanks!

I asked this a while ago. The consensus was clearly for the CMG. Since then, as I've done Range Safety Officer duty at my club, I've seen a few in action. They cycled well and were tolerant of most decent .22 LR cartridges. It will be my choice when I purchase one.

I spent a lot of time looking at the brands before buying the CMMG (with all the options) last December for a lower I assembled specifically for it. I guess what won me over is that I already have a 16" middy upper in 5.56 that has been utterly reliable for over 4 years.

My trust was not misplaced. I've put thousands and thousands of rounds through it already. So much so that I go buy 4 500 round packs and somehow they disappear before I even notice where they went. It feeds everything no sweat. Red box bulk Federal, blue box bulk Fed, Winchester 333,555, Wildcat. CCI Blazers. Even crap Golden Turds. It's so much fun to shoot that it goes with me to the range just about every time I go. If I had shot that much in 5.56 I would be broke!

Mine requires little more than a cleaning and lube every 500 rounds or so, and it is really easy to do. Then it's ready to digest yet another bulk pack of ammo!

Have Spike's and Tac Sol. The Spike's ST-22 has been discontinued. My Tac Sol is simply outstanding and according to some, is the Gold standard for .22 AR uppers (and I believe it). Don't have any experience with CMMG.

I agree... I loved my first CMMG .22LR upper so much, that i purchased a second one... Why purchase a second one?

                Two reasons:
                1) I wanted another one with a railed gas block so i could have folding irons on it..
2)I find that when my friends or family borrow my Upper, that it tends to take awhile to get it back because they love it so much!

Spikes is out because it's no longer made. Some ran, some didn't. Spikes discontinued them on the grounds that the suppliers has QC issues.
CMMG is at the top as far as quality, performance, and features. Plus they are priced lower than the competition.

I was just up at Burro yesterday. Ran about 1000 rounds of 22 with the kid (mostly the kid) through the TacSol 22LT. It fired as fast as we could pull the trigger; for me about 10 rounds in 2-3 seconds for fun .

The honeyDew and Papaya didn't make it back down the mountain.

I've heard nothing but great things on the CMMG, I did hear rumors that Spikes may revisit this segment before long.

I liked the CMMG for the price, and all the good reviews. Breaking er in at the range today.

If you just want a .22 lr on an AR looking platform, the M & P should work fine for you.
If you have an existing AR lower, a dedicated will give the ability to switch uppers and at the same time, maintain your familiar trigger and controls set up, plus the same weight.
The CMMG was designed as a training aid for L.E.O. and military. Made from actual AR parts, minus the BCG and .22lr barrel.

The M & P is light weight due to the polymer upper and lower. It would be a great AR .22 for kids and adults that do not need the weight, strength, or same controls of a standard AR.
