Remington 597, Marlin 60? Any thoughts?

Hey all - time to get back to rifles!

Am looking for a 22LR semi-auto rifle, for an adult not a kid sized Crickett.

Many moons back I owned a Remington 552, which is a tube fed semi-auto.

Would like to do tube fed or magazine that does not stick out from the body of the rifle.

    Under consideration:

    Ruger 10/22 (duh!)
    Remington 597
    Marlin 60 (tube fed)

Things like: Marlin 795 - Savage 64 probably not because the magazine extends and in a 22LR I don't think thats needed.

    2 questions:
    (1) Am I forgetting other contenders?

The Ruger 10/22 requires "extreme makover" to get it competitive with a good trigger. So -

    (2) What kind of TLC does the 597 and 60 need?

    thanks,
    Jerry

Can't speak to the Remington, but add a scope (or tech sights, if you like shooting irons) and a sling to the model 60 and you are all set. Oh yeah, tons and tons of ammo.

The M 60's are great guns. Cheap to buy, accurate out of the box, easy to clean after you've done it once. They have one drawback, the trigger. For a field gun they might be fine, but I've been spoiled by excellent triggers on other guns (granted they cost 3-4 times more than the Marlin).

Check out the Marlin section on rimfirecentral.com

Lots of good advice there as well as a tutorial on improving the trigger.

      I have two M-60's, I'm a fan.

This one is a stainless fitted to a Boyds thumbhole stock.

Whatever you get don't forget to try several different ammo's to find the one that runs best and is most accurate in your gun.

yeah been the ammo selection process with my rimfire pistols, the Sig Mosquito is happiest with CCI minimags but the S&W 22A will shoot anything.

How much of a PITA is it to tune the trigger on the M60? With the 10/22 everypody says R&R the trigger mechanism.

on my marlin model 60, i broke the trigger guard the first day. If you do get this one, i would get the metal trigger guard.

              That syas good things!

Is there much availalble aftermarket for parts? I know the 10/22 is the place to go for parts swap and upgrade nirvana, but I am looking to put glass on something, dial it in properly and be done with it.

              Maybe an aftermarket stock, TBD...

                Marlin by a far shot
I own 2 and love them both
But you are looking at the wrong model
60's have long or medium tubes with 22 or 20 inch barrels
look for a 75 - tube fed with a short tube that ends at the stock and 9 rounds
It was a clean up of the 99 and 99M1
I own a 75C - best of both worlds 18" barrel with 14 round medium tube
and an early squirrel stock 60

You may want to check out the "Spee-D-Loader" for dumping all your rounds into the tube at once. Try CDT or Brownell's; they're about $20

I own a remington 597 I've owned it for 3+ years and several thousands of rounds thru it with no real problems besides the usual ammo issues with cheap 22LR!

personal opinion, the Marlin 60 is hands down the best rifle if you dont need fast reloads.
when u start introducing fast reloads and such, then you hit the wall. accuracy is moa and below.

Marlin by far. Its just too bad that after 50 years and 12+ million rifles later, they have not done anything to improve the trigger. Hell, if Marlin charged an extra $20 per rifle for some semblance of a trigger enhancement it would be a huge win.

Adding to the question sheet -

Whats the rules on tube magazines for rimfire rifles being higher than 10 rounds?

I was looking for the rules on this one, legal or not?

Tube-fed +10 is good to go, as it's not a detachable magazine.

I had a Marlin 60 years ago, and recently bought a Marlin 795... Both are awesome, if I had it to do over again I might go with the tube, those little 795 mags are the hardest to load of all my guns! (Baby Uplula is on the list of stuff to buy.)
