Lower priced 17HMR?

I'm got a little money I've been saving for a new fun rifle. I was thinking .22 lever action but there just too much money. 17HMR's may not be any cheaper (cheapest 22 levers I found were 250$) are there any 17HMR's cheaper than this?

If you are looking for cheap shooting .17 are not the place. buy a .22

I got a Mossberg 817 at Big 5 for $165 + tax & DROS,comes out a little over $200, but I added a BSA 4-12x40 scope for around $60 @ ebay (the rifle does not have iron sights) and a Harris 3-9 bipod for around $75 @ MidwayUSA. Note that ammo is a little pricey (cheapest I found is $12 for a box of 50 @ a gunshow here in socal), +1 on damon 1272, .22 is a lot cheaper.

ya I know, this isn't about the ammo. I was speaking about the initial rifle price. I have two .22's so I fully understand the inexpensive joy. 17HMR would be a nice changeup.

I'll look into the mossberg, how well does it shoot? (better than me I'd assume!)

if you can find one of these used somewhere, you might find it for around $300. definitely my favorite.

I have looked at the mossbergs and they are ok. Though I have a marlin and and anschutz I would save up a little more and buy a savage. Great trigger and accurate. I love my .17's but if I had to do it again I would go with a savage.

I haven't shot the marlin nor the savage so i can't compare them with my mossberg, i haven't shoot my 817 that much but i got 1" groups at 50 yards, gun not broke in yet. haven't tried shooting it on paper at 100 yards but i notice that bullet trajectory is a lot flatter than a .22, so far i'm happy with it. by the way i got 2 extra magazines from tgs.com not sure for how much, i think it was around $15 each.

i have pulled a .3" 5rd group (not everyday, but i am mad/did something wrong if the groups are bigger than 3/4")out of my savage 93r17 at 100yd, they are some fine shooting rifles. but i notice that they are finicky with ammo. it took me several boxes of different ammo to find one that was consistent for my rifle. try some different brands/projectiles. i hear some folks weigh their cartridges to find the most similar weight, then shoot those for a group. if the brass and bullet are the same, it makes sense to find a consistent powder charge.

+1 on the savage, i put a barska .17 scope on mine, no problems to speak of.

I've bought 2 .17 HMRs in the last several months, Mossber 817 and Henry AcuBolt. Both will give me about 1" or better groups at 50 yds. Its always been too windy when I tried at 100 yds. The Mossberg is not the most refined rifle you find, but it seems to do the job. The Henry, a single shot, is the better made of the two and comes with a 4X scope. I swaped it out with a variable I had on my 10/22. The best prices I've found have been at Walmart or internet sales with Sportsmansguide.

I have two of the Savages a FV & BTVS both tack drivers, I also bought a Mossberg 817 nice little rifle but I like the heft of the Savages better, the 817 is for sale $150 with scope.

The 17 HMR ammo at Midsouth Shooters is priced good, though you have to pay shipping. If you buy enough at once, you can come out ahead.

Forgive a dumb question...
But what in the heck was this round developed for? (Besides the obvious)
Did somebody just want to make a BB go really fast? (.177 caliber)

Not sure but it does good at the range very accurate round, sure it would do well on ground squirrels and similar critters. I don't hunt but like what it does at the range.

A Varmint round.
But otherwise I guess the developer was just wildcattin around and looked at his BB gun and a new star was born.
Probably shoots flatter than the middle of Texas, huh?
Anybody do gelatin blocks with it?
Curious about it's terminal results on meat and bone.

(I'm kind of entrenched with my 30-06 (cannon) with my pet load of 110 grain bullets. BING! So I was curious about this unfamiliar micro brewery round.)
