    Looking for Savage Bolt Action

So after searching the previous threads for days, I see that the Savage Mark II is an extremely popular rifle amongst the Calguns Rimfire enthusiasts. I am 95% sure that I will end up purchasing a Savage Mark II for my first bolt action 22lr, but am still unsure about the specific model.

I will use the rifle for two purposes.
Target shooting/plinking (75% of the time)
Small game hunting (25% of the time)

I do not want a "bench" gun, but I do want a heavy barrel in order to improve accuracy and give the rifle some "heft". The model that really intrigues me is the Savage Mark II FV. Also, any specific scope recommendations? If any of you guys have any input I'd be glad to hear it. Let's hear it CalGuns!!!

Model: Savage Mark II FV w/ AccuTrigger
    Caliber: 22LR
    Barrel: 21"
    Twist: 1 in 16"
    Stock: Synthetic
    Overall: 39.75
    Weight: 6 lbs

Just fired my brand new MKIIG tonight for the first time, and it rocks. No failures of any kind, smooth and true. Within the first 10 rounds I was placing 'em in the center using the iron sites. The accutrigger was factory-set just right, very light. I can't wait to get this thing out to the desert and do some long range shooting.

      fv stock

What you gain with the heavy barrel here, you lose with the FV (hollow synthetic) stock. No worries though, you can buy several styles of aftermarket stocks from boyds or others.

I bought two FV's (one for me, one for son) and for bench work, I replaced the syn-stock with boyds classics. Also bored two 3/4" holes into the butt and packed them with lead shot to get even more "heft".

Also the bottom metal on the syn-stock is a real b***h to keep the action screws torqued up to proper tension. The metal is thin and flexible, and so is the plastic stock. I was having to re-torque ours about every 150 to 200 rounds in the fv stock. It just wouldn't hold tension.

For hunting/woods walking they go back into the fv stocks which are considerablly lighter. But for target work, wood is good..

We mounted Mueller APV optics on these two, and haven't had a single reason to complain about in over a year with about 6000 rounds. A place called Joe Bob outfitters usually has really good prices on the mueller line, and often posts a discount code over on rim fire central.

You owe it to yourself to check out the CZ 452 as a slightly higher quality alternative to the Savage for similar money.

Calguns is great but you will find a far deeper wealth of information at rimfirecentral.com

Although the CZ looks like a higer quality rifle, it is nearly twice the cost of the Savage. A heavy barrel version of the CZ lists for $448.

Kryptyde is right: rimfirecentral.com is where I first learned about the Savage.

Can't go wrong with the right Savage. There lower end heavy barreled rifles do have cheep flimsy plastic stocks. Spend the few extra $ and go with the BV.

Or go with one of the lower cost heavy barrels ones and get your self an aftermarket wood stock.
