Trick to putting back Marlin 795 recoil spring

Title says it all. Recently bent my recoil spring for my Marlin 795 bad a couple of weeks ago and my replacement from Midway finally came in. Is there a technique to putting the recoil spring without bending it?

Dont know man, but if it is a similar setup as the Model 60, it is a major pain in the ***. It makes you feel like you should be buying 5-packs of replacement springs.

Just completely broke my spring (snapped in half). Ordered two more from Midway and the backorder till mid-July.

Bent it 90 degrees when trying to put the bolt back into the receiver. Made it straight with my needle-nose pliers but I guess if you bend and reshape too many times, it will break in half eventually.

We teamed up to bring you a "how to" on safely removing the Marlin 60 bolt. Almost every month we see this posted on RFC………. We hope this little tutorial can save a few springs. Your friends, p-t-max and ArrowDodger

^Thanks Chaos. Just watched a bunch of assembly vids on youtube. Now I gotta wait till I get my recoil springs before attempting it.

Also check the pin and see if it is bent. I have replaced 4 springs in my model 60 and one pin. Also try jpcustom.com. They sell after market springs. Cost a little more but they feel stronger. Thats whats in my model 60 now.

I bent my spring too the first time I disassembled my 795, just be very careful with it and take your time. Those springs aren't cheap either!

try ebay for springs. sometimes quite affordable.

Got the confirmation from Midway that two more springs are finally being shipped today. Hopefully I dont screw this up (cross fingers)

I just pulled a Model 60 apart for my first time today and cleaned it for a buddy (maybe it's first cleaning since '77?) and found I almost bent the spring putting the bolt back in. What worked for me was to push the spring and pin assembly into the bolt so at least a little bit of the pin on the end of the spring is pushed into the bolt, holding the spring straight. Drop the bolt the rest of the way into the receiver and release the spring and pin into place; compress the spring with your hands rather than trying to compress the spring with the bolt.

I use a pair of vice grips to hold the spring compressed while I reinstalled the guide. Just make sure you have tape or rubber coated vice grips so you don't mar the guide.

Compress the spring and pin into the bolt and then put the end of the pin into the notch on the receiver and slowly push in the bolt into the receiver. Keep in mind that you have to keep the pin and spring in the bolt the whole time to keep the spring from bending.
