walther sp22 m1 in CA... with rails??

So i see the walther sp22 m1 is on the roster (no other versions seem to be)... BUT could I buy the m1 and then add the rails and be legal in CA?

BTW I'm talking both top & bottom rails. (And yes I see the m2 is on the list but 6" model is not my interest.)

Nothing illegal about adding rails to a pistol.

since they only list the M1 and M2 on the roster, it is not clear why so I was not sure if having the top rail was some how illegal in CA. If not, why is the M3 (comes with rail) not on the roster as the only difference between the M2 and M3 is the rails come on the M3. So it seems, it has something to do with the rail, maybe top rail?

Since the M2 and M3 are different model numbers, they would have to submit samples of each for testing to make the roster even though they are the same gun, only the rail is different. They probably can't justify the cost of submitting the M3 just to get it on the roster when you could purchase the M2 and buy the rails separately. Just like the P22CA with the 3.4" barrel, there are 4 models listed but the only differences are the color of the frame or the finish of the slide yet each had to be submitted separately. If they really want to have a roster and do it right, it should be by model not individual SKU. As long as the design and internals are the same all variants should be qualified. If that was the case, I could've gotten my wife the pink frame P22 which is what she really wanted.

yeah, that makes a certain amount of sense. And yeah, I would have just bought the rails and added them on, but wanted to be sure that was not the reason it was not on the roster.

But I found out today this gun line was discontinued in 2011 and that the SP22 M1 CA model (no threaded barrel) is harder to find as it is. I have seen some killer pricing on the SP22 M1 but then I look, not for a "CA" model. So it may now be a mute point.

I have an M2 for sale. It is the spin in the barrel that makes them illegal not the rails. The M2 is legal

Yep, I have seen become pretty educated on that line of pistol since my first post about them - talked with dealers, Wather, web research, etc. I replied to your PM with a pretty in depth response related to what you have for sale. Thanks for reaching out.

Just FYI for anyone reading this, this whole line of guns is now discontinued. I talked with Walther a month ago and they stopped stocking parts for that pistol - all models M1 M2 etc - and will no longer stock it or repair it since no parts. As a matter of fact, they have not had parts nor the gun since Jan 1 time frame. You can find dealers blowing them out who bought up stock to dump or who are dumping their stock given the scenario.

Oh.. and it appears Walther did resubmit to the Roster as both the M1 and M2 were added back until 2012 as they expired in July 2011.
