just get the 22lr. the other two arent comparible to 22lr for cost. while they are faster and better at varmit. 22lr is great for a pure plinker range toy.

I wouldnt get either two calibers just becasue for the cost 223 is barely a few cents more per round and you get so much more.

Get the one that trips your trigger. Yes bulk 22 ammo is cheaper but you can pay as much and more for 22lr ammo as you can for .17hmr or .22 wmr. Bulk 22 ammo is fine for plinking but won't cut it for semi-serious target shooting. I have five 22lr and one 22wmr and like them all. On the down side I wish I had gotten a .17hmr instead of the .22wmr but they are similiar enough that I wouldn't have both.

Hey but back to the rimfire question, what do you guys think about a savage bolt action wood stock. In comparison how are the marlin tube fed magazines?

Ruger 77-22mag......a great little rifle , and I like the 22mag for what it is , a hunting round......
if you want small game , and be to be able to fight off all those pesky little cans .....and do it on the cheap (22/17mags are not cheap) get a nice bolt in 22lr......I like the Rugers alot , a good Rem. would be nice to look at , so would a CZ...and the list could go on forever........get what floats your boat the best....

Don't know what your budget is,CZ 455 can be converted from 22LR to 22WMR or 17HMR.I have all 3 barrels for mine.Still working on breaking it in in 22LR.Haven't shot it yet in other calibers.

Yes thats my home. I don't think you can go wrong with either a Savage or Marlin rifle. I have a Marlin 925M (22wmr) very accurate out to 100yds and lots of energry left in the bullet in that caliber at that range. I also have a Savage MKII BTVS in 22lr and is very accurate as well but also very picky about ammo.

The Savage has a better action but at twice the cost of the Marlin. Happy with both. Were I to buy the Marlin in 22wmr today, it would be a tube fed model.

If budget is a major factor then .22LR is the way to go. You just cant beat three cents a round.

is the tube feed magazine similar to an shotguns tube fed shell? In my mind I think tube fed is obsolete but I know it's not true vs. a magazine fed.

Tube feed allows you to have more rounds before reloading (normally). I think the Marlin 60 as an example, holds 14 rounds in the tube. Older 60s hold 17-18 rounds. Also for some reason .22lr magazines tend to be expensive for some rifles.

Similiar to shotgun tubes but they load differently, most are loaded from the barrel end of the tube. Some older rifles loaded thru the stock but I think no one is making a .22 that loads that way anymore.

Okay lets say I get a bolt action 22L.R, what do you guys think about an closed style red dot sight for optics? Also, on bolt action 22L.R's can I feed the rifle almost any 22L.R? Reason is I have a Ruger 22/45 pistol and you know I can shoot most bulk packs but not all, is this the same for the bolt action rifles? I would think not right since it's bolt action?

I have shot nearly every imagineable type of .22lr ammo thru a variety of bolt action rifles. All the rifles shot all the ammo without failure. The difference is that different 22 rifles will not always shoot the same ammo with the same accuracy. Case in point: My Savage BTVS will only shoot Wolf Match Target with the accuracy that I want. Any bulk ammo in that rifle shoots like a shotgun pattern. The Wolf is $5/50. My Kimber shoots best with Lapua Center-X, $10/50. It will shot 5 shots in 1/4" @50 yds with that ammo. With any bulk ammo I am lucky to get 3/4" groups.

When it comes to 22 ammo, the higher the cost, the more accurate it will be. My favorite plinking ammo is Federal AutoMatch @ Walmart $16/325. Shoots accurate enough for plinking and practice for more serious target shooting, then I switch to the good stuff. With 22 ammo you get what you pay for, except for most Remington 22 ammo which I do not ever buy. Too dirty, too many failures to fire and not accurate in any of my five 22 rifles.

I have 22lr, 22mag, 17m2, and 17hmr. all but the 22lr are dedicated hunting rigs. too expencive to just plink. so Im with you, get the 22lr. it will plink cheaply, hunt with the best of them or shoot informal targets with just an ammo change. then add a 17hmr later. DR

I would look at the new line of Marlin 22s coming out. New trigger group, basically a clone of the Savage Accutrigger. The microgrove barrels on the Marlins tend to be pretty accurate and the pricing is low compared to others.

If you want a dedicated target rifle then the bang for the buck is the Kimber 82G rustys (most have no rust at all, mine did not) at CMP. $430 shipped to your door, wait for the rifle can be up to 6 weeks. No FFL or DROS required, CMP does the background check included in the price. They are going fast so don't delay if that's your choice. They are single shot but fantastic shooters. Good luck with your choice, and be careful they can become an addiction.
