Never, never store a firearm in a case for a long time. The changing temperatures will cause condensation to form inside the care and on the firearm. Either a humidity controlled safe or if stored in a closet then a gun sock is your next best bet. For long term storage in any situation its best to make sure the outside and inside of the firearm and barrel is liberally oiled.

Hard to just repair cracked clear coat, best to remove all and recoat.

That what I intend to do. I just don't know how.
I've called a local gunsmith many times but he never returns my calls.
Google "clear coat repair", some articles and youtube videos.

I found some duracoat "shake 'N spray" but I think the finish would come out better airbrused.

              Heres a link http://www.houtsenterprises.net/dur_shakenspray.html

Here is a link to a project a guy is working on over at Rimfirecentral.com.
Ok So I have been lurking for a while... Not new to guns or Ruger 10/22's i think I have had 5 or 6 over the years. This one I am not sure if I got off of GB or if this was my old childhood gun. I have a few hanging around my house. If it is my child hood gun, my Dad gave it to me when I was...

If you search the word Duracoat over at RFC you will find all kinds of examples.
I would send the receiver out to be Dura or Moly coated. A lot of coaters offer a whole slew of different colors. I had one Molycoated a few years ago and it is still looking good.
The bolt handle is a very cheap fix too. Replace it. Lots of cheap factory takeoffs! In fact, PM me, I might have an extra laying around I can send you. No charge!

just polish it. 1,000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit. then a polishing wheel

comes out like a mirror finish. thats what I did to mine.

I was about to post this over there. Good thing I used the search button! Imagine that!

I've thought about it but I like the look of a flat matte finish better.
I'm not really looking to make this an "ultimate" 10/22
The only thing I might put on is a Clark Custom medium weight barrel and tech sights but that's about it.
