I installed a new green mountain barrel on my 10/22 last week and took it to the range. Everything went fine up until I released the bolt and it wouldn't chamber the round. I had to push a bit but I got the bolt to close however this happened a few more times that day. Now this is something my 10/22 has never done and I was thinking maybe I put the new barrel on too tight or something like that? Does anybody have an idea what could be causing this and most importantly how I can fix it?

Ruger new barrel problem?

Was the barrel installed so that the extractor would squarely enter the slot for it in the barrel? Might be something to take a look at.Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.

Dirty/tight match chamber probably. Unless you are seeing scratch marks on the side of the extractor. The difference between a factory and an aftermarket chamber can be problematic.
Trust me, it's worse with 50BMG.
Good luck. Oh yeah, try a lot of different ammo. Stingers and some others have longer cases that don't fit well into the average chamber, match or otherwise.

Match Barrel/Tight Chamber + crap ammo = your problem.
I had this issue with my 10/22 until I started using eley ammo or the remington subsonic hp's.

You bought a barrel with a match chamber. Feed it match ammo. Give Wolf MT a try.Comment

Try crap ammo. A couple years ago, I upgraded my barrel. I think we have the same one-- GM 16" fluted. I've never had an issue with bulk pack, Federal automatch, SK standard plus, Minimags, etc. Every bbl is unique but mine has not had an issue.
I'd check for the extractor dragging. A removal/reinstall might fix things.Comment

Dont rule out the possibility of a defective barrel. GM has been known to have quality control issues in the past but are reportedly pretty good about dealing with them.
I dont buy the match ammo/match chamber thing...I think its an excuse for poor machining tolerances. My 10/22 uses a KID match barrel and happily shoots every ammo I have tried with it including the cheap and dirty.Comment

that isn't poor machining tolerances. .22lr ammo production is the one with poor quality. try measuring some of the bulk pack ammo sometimes, the variances in size/shape would astound you. hence why many recommend to use match ammo once you get match barrels
the KID barrel you have probably accounts for that and machined the chamber more like OEM so it can accommodate it.Originally posted by leelawBecause -ohmigosh- they can add their opinions, too?Originally posted by SoCalSig1911Preppers canceled my order this afternoon because I called them a disgrace...
