Need help with my boy's .22lr

My boy has a little Savage Cub Cal .22lr rifle. One of the buttstock screws is missing. I am not sure if it only had one from the beginning or if he lost the second one. Either way, there are two holes and I only have one screw.

The screw I have has an allen head. It is bigger then a #10 machine screw but smaller then 1/4" so it has got to be a #12 or Metric. It fits a M6 metric size but doesn't thread in the 1.0 thread ratio. The gun is made in Canada so it could be metric.

I haven't been able to find a replacement at Osh or Lowes.

I have a tractor supply and a home depot in town I could try if anyone would think they would have it.

Or if someone has the same gun with the manual and could look up the part number that would be a big help.

Sounds like you are describing one of Savage's "proprietary" screws. They use a #12-32 UNEF screw to hold the action in the stock, but I didn't think they used machine screws to hold the butt plate on. live and learn..

Many savage owners that have switched stocks or bedded theirs have looked in vain for these 12-32 UNEF screws on the commercial market. They apparently don't exist outside of the firearms market.

Your best bet is to call Savage customer service. IIRC their website now has the parts diagrams with numbers as well, so with a little searching you can locate it that way. If not, the CS members at Savage can determine what you need rather quickly. Also, they are going to ask you for the serial number of your rifle, so have it handy when you call.

Thanks for the help. On the savage website I found the part #. It is a 19D. It cost $2.00 but you have to spend a min of $6.00.

I tried Fastenal and they don't have it either. Its funny because I thought I gained some ground. The Fastenal guy narrowed it down to a #12-32. But they don't have it. Then I come home and see what you had wrote.

I wish I could just buy it locally. I get a little frustrated when manufactures make proprietary screws like that. I mean come on.... it is to hold the buttstock on. Its not like it is part of the action or holding the space shuttle together.

If you go to the savage forum on rimfirecentral, you may find a screw for a lot less. Many of the savage shooters that post there have switched to aftermarket stocks on their mark II's, and had to buy longer screws for the action (these screws have the same diameter and pitch). If you post your dilemma there, I would bet dollars to donuts that someone will offer to mail you one of their old (too short for them) screws if it will work on your butt plate.
