should i get Ruger MK III

i have been saving up for a used glock for a while now. but i would not be able to take it to the range and shoot it as much as i like so i have been tossing the idea of getting a MK III around because .22 is quite cheap and i could go out shooting more. i hear alot of good things about them, but for every good thing i hear i also hear a horror story about how hard the thing is to break down. what are your thoughts on this pistol. i am looking at the shorter barrel ones.

You won't be disapointed, as far as field stripping, if you follow the directions explicitly it's not hard to assemble. The magazine disconnect is what makes it a pain (you have remove and re-insert magazine a couple times during the process, if you don't it will not come apart/go back together)My mark III is one of my favourite guns to shoot. Not just because it's cheap to shoot, but because it's super accurate, eats everything and it's built to last a lifetime or two.

My first pistol was an xd, problem was, I shot it poorly, and working on correcting my problems was expensive. I picked up a mark III (no frills, 6" tapered barrel) and while it is easier to shoot, I can work on my shooting, without breaking the bank. I should have bought it first.

I recently picked up a 22/45 (mechanically almost identical to the Mark III). Like Fspeed says, it is a good pistol for practicing things like trigger control. Also a lot less expensive to shoot than centerfires.

My experience with takedown (and particularly reassembly) corresponds to what Falstaff says: follow the directions explicitly and with a little practice it's not bad.

My Ruger MKIII Hunter is my only 22, and the only one i need. The Ruger 22 design is one of the best. Yes, take down is hard, but like all pistol, it is a process. Once you remember the order to remove stuff it will be fine. It took two tries to remember the complete processes.

Mark III Target

Great pistol. I'm new to guns - about a year and a half. This was my second purchase after a 10/22. As above, great to shoot, fun gun - no problems. I have had some brands of ammo have a little trouble cycling, but for the most part everything works great.

Regarding the "nightmares" taking this apart, it is a bit of work. It comes apart easily once you do it once or twice. But, the re-build is tricky. There are some good videos on Youtube that can easily guide you through the process though. Personally, I think it's half the fun of shooting it.

Don't hesitate to buy it. This gun is super accurate, reliable and durable. Those all come at the cost of a slightly complicated (mainly due to mag d/c) breakdown/reassembly procedure.

I would find a good used MKII. Cheaper. Doesn't have the mag disconnect. Lots of custom parts available.

MarkIII's are great guns. Get one and shoot the hell out of it. You'll love it. But when you start the DROS on it, go and get yourself a rubber mallet. Ruger should include one. It is a pain to break down and reassymble, but with pratice its not to bad

Go to the store and check the grip versus the 22/45 and/or buckmark.
See what else is available, see which grip fits you best.
Rugers and Brownings are "bullet proof", you will keep it for your grandkids.
Other brands have stories told, but with ammo testing you will find the combination that works.
Everybody needs a 22 pistol and rifle, or two.

I have cleaned the bore but haven't disasembled it yet. 6" (5.5"?)bull barrel, fun and cheap. It is also nicely accurate even in my hands.However I do like the look of the standard tapered barrel MKII or III's more than the 22/45 style. To me they look similar to a Luger or Nambu. Cool. I wil be adding a standard model tapered barrel shooter to go with my 22/45 one of these days.

There's a good reason for that. Bill Ruger patterned the original after the Nambu.
