    getting my 597...

...on tuesday May 31st. Im all excited. I will be giving this to my 13yo niece so she can do an Appleseed with me this summer. I bought it used from a local FFL at a good price and it includes one of those cheap $6 scopes from Wally World.
this model also came with 1 plastic magazine, but i did order 2 more metal body mags as well
it also comes with the grey plastic stock
overall the rifle looked good and clean, like it was barely used, i hope it shoots as good as it looks

    Question is:
-what should i do first and foremost before going out to shoot it?
-what type/brand of ammo should i use?
    -any sling recommendations?
-it does not come with the iron sights, is it necessary or should i just leave it blank and keep the cheap scope?

ill post pics and a quick range report when i get around to shooting it this week :bthumb:

this is the picture of the actual rifle from the FFLs website

    Kandy,

From the looks of the rifle in general it's standard configueration includes iron sights so look carefully in the front and back for signs of them removed in order to get the scope on. Most likely the rear sight is too tall for the "tip off" rings to clear....hence the reason they were removed.

As far as ammo is concerned.... I'd just pickup a brick of some CCI "Blazer" ammo to start. Since it was bought used please check the barrel crown for dings from clean rod usage. Have a smith re-crown it so your ammo will print properly.

Only other issue I'd do is take it apart using the instruction manual which is free from Remington and clean and oil it well. The Remington 597 is finicky to shoot so work with it and it'll work out. My 597 is slightly customized so aftter a little tuning it works very well for some nice bench rest shooting fun.

        PROBLEMS

today was my first day out with the 597...both me and my niece shot the rifle

        couple of concerns
-the gun seemed to have a FTF, FTE, Misfire almost on every magazine we loaded in to it, there were at least 20 issues out of 200rds
-seemed that the cartridge would not chamber when the bolt is released, and needed an extra push to properly chamber a round
-a lot of misfires, i dont know what is causing it
-failure to eject a couple of times but i chalk that up to the misfires

any ideas? how much tension does the guiderod springs have to actually have? could it be that its too loose because the previous owner was afraid of over tightening it?

at first i thought it was the new magazines, but even the plastic magazine had feeding issues, not only that even when we only loaded 5rds per magazine, the same issues were still there, so i really dont think its the magazines

we are both quite frustrated and any help, info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

        thank you

I am sure this has been covered but some magazines were crap and need to be replaced. I have one and I only shoot the 1st 8 rounds out of the 10 round mag. if I don't it jams every time. Otherwise I love the 597.

FTE and misfire are usually cleaning issues with 22's. Gunk will prevent the round from coming out of the chamber and can also prevent the firing pin from striking with enough force. Poor ammo is a cause with FTF. Get that baby really clean and nicely oiled and I bet it works a lot better. Also try some CCI mini mags or other quality ammo..

yup, went for a good cleaning

found out that it had a tiny dent at the chamber, grinded and sanded it, feeding issue solved

gonna have to hit the range to see of the misfire and ejection issues has been fixed after a good cleaning

i have some mini mags i will try it next time

              thanks

I had some issues with mine when it was new.. I replaced the extractor with a volquarsen unit, polished the guide rails, shortened the rubber bolt bumper and used dry lube instead of oil. Worked like a charm after that, til It exploded.. Anyway, that's more an issue with the .17 HMR in semi autos.

Bought mine new a few years ago. And every mag had fte. I got so annoyed with it and put it in the safe for a year or so. I pulled it out and changed hammer and extractor. And never had a problem again.

well i shot the 597 this week

had a few misfires and 2 double feeds

might go ahead and order the VQ hammer and extractor next week

hopefully i can get this dialed in so i can finally pick up my 91/30

                        KandyRedCoi,

Check the spring tension on you hammer and feel it with your thumb....if it feels weak then it might need to be replaced. Also for the double feed issues get rid of the magazine and retry with a new one. The spring in the mag is too weak and most likely that's causing the double feeds.

Since you found a ding at the edge of the chamber it shows allot of dry firing so consider getting a new barrel and use snap caps to protect the chamber.

If your using/shooting CCI "Blazer" ammo then you should be fine as it basically the same as CCI "Mini Mag" without the copper coating.

                        Good luck,

                        Mail Clerk

                              Coi,
I recently purchased a 597 and LOVE IT!!! I did replace the extractor and hammer with the Voquartzen parts and it works wonderfully. When I got it home, i cleaned the entire thing. I had read on numerous posts about making sure the guide rods are well lubed (Dry Lube) and not too tight in the receiver. ( about 1/4 turn back from snug). I fired 500 rounds from several manufacturers the first day out-not a single problem! (except my lack of marksmanship!) I also disassembled and lubed the metal mags that I got and that made it easier to load. I think if you try this stuff, you'll never fail to enjoy this rifle!
