Thinking about 10/22 to complement my AR-15

I want to be able to sharpen my skills at the range more often without breaking the bank. For the cost of 1000 rounds of .223, I could have an entire 10/22 along with a bit of ammo to practice with. It seems totally logical to me that I NEED a 10/22

My goal is to start with a reasonably stock 10/22, then slowly go through the process of modifying it and observing the improvements. I just want to make sure that I start with a good receiver so I have something to build on.

Are there lots of differences in the receiver between the various models of 10/22, or are they all the same? Should I start with a a factory Ruger receiver, or should I just buy aftermarket? I'm not looking for an extreme target rifle, but I can definitely see myself spending up to $1k over the course of this project.

Just warning you, you're headed down a slippery sloap. Rimfirecentral has a ton of info on 10/22 mods.

I bought a used one off my brother. First thing to do is get the magazine release, bolt catch and target hammer. All 3 parts are in the same area. The hammer made a big difference for me. If thats all you do, you'll have a sweet rifle.

Or... You could do like i did and put more money into your ruger than you paid for it. But mine shoots dimes with federal bulk now. Plus its one of a kind. Have fun, you'll love a 10/22

You can't go wrong with a 10/22 and how customizable they are. Report back on what mods you pick up.

If you want an AR trainer. Go with a S&W M&P 15-22. I'm using mine to train then I'm going to get a real AR

Get a 22lr upper for the AR. Maintain the same ergos.

Thanks for the replies. I considered a .22 upper for an AR (I have an extra lower), but decided against it. I really just want to start with a regular 10/22, but want to make sure the new receivers are still good enough to build on. Can I buy a cheap 10/22 rifle to start with, or should I get an aftermarket receiver?

or...you could do like i did...a 'dedicated' .22LR AR and purchase centerfire uppers to go with it...i went thru Spikes Tactical with the ST-22 M4LE.

Seems to be mandatory to have atleast one.
