    rust on 10-22 barrel

I have an 20+ year old 10-22 that hasn't been fired in about 15 years - there are some small rust spots on the barrel. Any tips to remove the rust and get it ready to shoot again?

Pics! You might be able to just steel wool and either paint it or reblue.

A little oil and gently rubbing it with fine steel wool will usually take the rust off without hurting the bluing. If its just surface rust it often comes off without leaving noticeable marks at all. If it's pitted there's not much you can do for it. Some people claim that using a baking soda electrolysis bath will redeposit small amounts of the rust back onto the original part as unoxodized steel but it's not a process I've used personally.

I recommend that you use brass wool and gun oil. Brass is not as hard as steel and won't cut into the metal of the barrel. If the barrel is pitted that's another story.

If its bad, toss it in the trash and buy a brand new take off barrel for $25.

If the rust is just surface rust, flood the effected surface with something like Breakfree (what I use on most everything) and let sit for 1/2 hour or so---take a pre-1980 COPPER penny and use the edge to rub the rust right off with little to no damage to the blued surface. If the rust is in the form of pitting into the metal, like one of the previous posters said, find a perfect "take-off" barrel for really cheap---they are very easy to change out.
