I have a Mossberg 817 HMR and I have been getting great performance so far with it. I had some cheap scope laying around that I got for $40 and even with that I get good accuracy at 200 yards. My buddy knocked the center out of a clay pigeon the other day at that range. I looked at the ballistic charts for different .17 HMR rounds and it said the bullet drop at 200 yards was 32 inches. My rifle was sighted in at 100 yards when we shot at the 200 and it did not require much adjustment. I'm talking with guys who make shots pass 300. Anyone have similar results? I'm curious how much performance I can get out of this round. I have been using the Winchester V-max but have been told the Federal Premium V-Shock is a better round...

.17 HMR performance

i seem to recall having read somewhere that all 17 HMR ammo is made by only one or two companies...
I've had good luck with the 17 HMR accuracy wise at 100 to 150 yards.
the 17 grain bullet is simply too small to retain much energy over extended yardages.
my personal use "guide" for the 17HMR is no more than 150 yards for live game.

I used the program below and it shows a drop of about 8 inches at 200 yds when sighted for 100. I just ordered a Mossberg 817 and am biding my time during the 10 day period.

I sight mine in at 50. Depending on the hight of your scope you'll be back on at 100 or so, about 2" low at 150, and 7+ at 200.
It's a very effective round on ground squirrels out to 150 or so.01001001 00100000 01110111 01101001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01001110 01001111 00100000 01001100 01001111 01001110 01000111 01000101 01010010 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101101 01110000 01101100 01111001Comment

From personal experiance, a 17 will do the job on ground squirrels out passed where I can see them! I sight in at 130yds. at any distance from 75 to 150yds a center hold on a squirrel will get me a dead squirrel. at 200yds I put the crosshairs on top of its head. beyond 200 if I can hit them its got enough power but my hit ratio drops to 50% or less. 17HMR is one of thos cartriges that the charts dont tell the whole story. passed 200 my center fire rifles come into there own.
