    Ammo for Ruger 10/22

I am waiting for my Ruger 10/22 to be released from its waiting period and was wondering about ammo for it. I have purchased a few different brands of bulk .22LR to begin to see what it prefers. My only previous .22 experience was with an old single shot bolt action that my brother now has.

    My questions:

I have about 40 old .22 shorts and a few longs sitting around. Will the 10/22 like those? I suppose a different magazine is needed? What about the .22 magnums? Someone told me you can get a magazine for the 10/22 that holds the magnums.

Not a 10/22 expert here (I owned one for a short time about 20 years ago), but I believe it will fire shorts and longs, but they won't cycle the action or feed properly. You have to load them one at a time.

Ruger sold a magnum version for a few years, but it has been discontinued. You can still buy the magazines, but your rifle is not chambered for the magnum cartridges.

I see people feeding thousands of Federal bulk .22LR's through their 10/22's without issue. I know my Savage 64 likes them as well.

If you wan't to shoot shorts in your 10/22 then you need this

A standard 10/22 cannot fire 22 magnums, however there is a model that is specially designed to shoot 22 magnums in the 10/22 builds but again it is designed from the get go to handle the mags.

as it has a 1:16 twist rate, most bulk 22lr high velocity in 32-40 gr. should do just fine.

22 mag is a much longer rd. , magazine wont fit in std. 10/22. also higher pressures and questionable extraction reliability.

A 22 Magnum will not even chamber in a .22lr rifle. The case is larger in diameter than 22lr case. There is a reason that the barrel is stamped 22lr and not 22 WMR. Try Federal Automatch and/or CCI Tactical. Both are made for semi-autos.

The answer to, " Can I shoot 22 Magnum in my 22lr whatever, is always NO".

            10/22 ammo

I have heard and have had good experience with:

            1: Wolf Match Target
2: SK Jagd - SK Standard Plus

            Both manufactured by SK

Have heard that the more expensive choices didn't produce better results.
For my 10/22, these performed as well as some Eley Tenex and better than CCI, RWS and any bulk packs.

Federal bulk from wally is my personal favorite. It is relatively affordable, clean, cycles in my internally stock 1022 FLAWLESSLY. Winchester bulk is also good, but I don't shoot it as much.

That's a great deal. Most of my 22's like Federal as well. It's just my P22 that sometimes has problems cycling with some bricks. They are not consistent on the power as most of the time the work fine, but some bricks won't cycle my P22. My P22 eats everything else. I think I have around 10k of it.

CCI Mini-Mags & CCI Blazer works fine through everything I own, including the 10/22.

Thanks, tileguy...that's a good deal, esp with free shipping. I just ordered a case.

Stay with the 525 fed wally packs and you will do fine.

Stay away from Remington golden bullet. I've had plenty of fail to fire issues with GB in the 10/22, Ruger single-six, and a hi-standard revolver.
