    Ruger 22/45 4" or 5.5" barrel

Bought my first 10/22lr last month, and been so happy with it, now I'm thinking of getting the 22/45 so my wife can also enjoy it. Between the two, which one would you recommend, the 4" or 5.5" barrel? Held them both without ammo, and I liked the 4". It seem to balanced better, and the longer one was kinda heavier at the front end. Is there any disadvantage with the 4" barrel? Thx!

Longer barrel = longer sight radius, which should theoretically give you greater accuracy, and reduction of recoil through additional weight (recoil isn't much of an issue with a .22 though).

Shorter barrel = lighter overall weight and quicker handling.

If you liked the 4", I'd get that. I've got a 5.5" bull barrel model and I love it, but I prefer handguns with longer barrels. I'm sure you'll be happy with either.

I have a 4", love it, but if I was doing it again, I would get the 5.5"

        thanks for all the inputs.
G-forceJunkie - any reason why makes you want to get the 5.5"?

The 4" barrel I bought was not drilled and tapped so I could mount a red dot. I should have gotten the 5.5" barrel which is tapped. Check into it if you want to mount a red dot.

Owning a MKII, MK512 (5" bull) and a 22/45, P4 (4") I'd say get both. I prefer the 22/45 grip over the standard MKII grip. Both shoot well and the adjustable sights can be set for as far as 50yds without any problems.

                    I say go 4".

I have the 22/45 "slab side" 6 7/8"... I want to cut a good chunk off the end since it's so muzzle heavy.

If you plan on a red dot, site radius means nothing.

I was worried about the shorter barrel version will lose the accuracy, but after reading you guys comments/inputs, I feel more confident with the 4". I'll set on it now, and will save up for the 5.5" later Thanks again and happy shooting!!

i was in your shoes just prior to picking one up. i went to the store and handled both 4" and 5.5" for a looooong time. the next day, when it went on sale, i chose the 5.5".

imho, the 4" is 'snub' and the longer 5.5" is a better learning handgun with its longer site radius. aside from that, the sale price closed the deal at sub usd200.

did you bought one recently? if so, would you mind to share the store/pricing? the lowest I can find is from Turner's, $269.99 + tax + Dros = $325. Thx!

I bought the 5.5" at Turner's last year when it was on sale for $199 .
