    Boyds' Marlin 60 stock arrived!

Snagged a nutmeg stock off the site when I went browsing and received it yesterday, everything test fit perfectly. So I have dove in with the sanding and tru-oil

    Sanding done, ready for truoil

    First coat on

Many more coats later curing for next wet-sand

This is a fun project, cannot wait to have it finished and put together.
Got my Utah CCW, Thanks JimAmentler!

        Beautiful...

I love that laminated wood....so nice and very strong as well.

Are you going to CLEAR COTE it with something..?. (a GLOSS or Satin finish?)

        Have fun

Nice job you are doing there. I got one a year or so ago and its holding up nicely. They are great stocks.

Make sure that you seal the wood in the inletted portion of the stock to prevent moisture from getting to the wood. Nothing fancy, just a coat or two of something to protect the wood.

Indeed, in the further coating I went inside and out coating the entire thing, but not much on the insides, because I don't want it to interfere with the fit of the receiver

It's the same theory as priming or varnishing the holes we drill for locksets and hinges on exterior doors. Keeps out moisture that can ruin a door and cause delam/swelling/cracking issues down the road. In fact most door mfg's won't warrant your door if you fail to do this. So on your nice looking stock I would seriously consider taking some oil or even thinned out (70/30) varnish and apply at least two coats to the bare lumber. At least enough to penetrate the wood thoroughly. After they dry you can then take an X-acto knife and trim out any buggers that may have filled the corners of the inset. So that your parts will fit nice & purdy........

Looks nice! A stock is a fun and easy project. I have done two Boyds stocks for Savage 17hmr's, one for me and one for a friend.

Here's the first one with my action in it. I chopped about 1" off the forend of this one because I didn't like the shape. It's a oil finish, and I didn't do anything significant inside the stock.

This is my stock, which looks like it might be the same wood as yours, also an oil finish. This one was much less finished inside and took quite a bit of work to fit the action. On this one I bedded the recoil lug area and pillar-bedded the action. Each one was sanded progressively down to 320 grit, then dampened to "feather" the wood. I hit them with 400 grit after that and then steel wool before oiling and polishing. I like the oil finish for it's looks, durability and easy repair.

Heres one I did for my son a couple of years ago. its a brown cammo Boyds stock sanded smooth and clear coated with semi gloss verithane. I made 4 of these for my boys as Christmas gifts. they loved them. now the leftys in the family are feeling "Left Out". Ive been pushing Boyds to make either a left hand T hole stock or an Evolution style ambidextrous stock for the Mod 60.
