What magnification scope for .22lr?

In general, what power of magnification is appropriate for .22LR? The rifle is a Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. Used mainly for plinking.

1 x4 will do you just fine out to 100 yards, plus on the rifle it will add only a little extra weight

I have the ruger 10/22 target tactical w/16" barrel so I went with a red dot to keep it more tacitcal...

Two of my buddies have the target model with 20" barrel and they both have the 3-9 el cheapo scopes. Works great I always enjoy using it. If I end up buying another 10/22 I will definitely go with a 3-9 el cheapo.

Wow, doesn't it make that gun really top heavy? I had one on an AR for a while and it always made the gun feel like it was going to capsize in my hands.

I think it depends on how accurate your rifle is.

I use a Mueller APV (4.5x-14x) on my CZ 452 Style and ordered a Mueller Eraticator (8.5x-25x) for my full KID 10/22 build (this one is still in jail...and the waiting is killing me!)

For plinking its up to you.

For hunting 1-4,2-7,3x9 are all good.

Targets atleast 14x.

For plinking any magnification you want. No reason not to run 24x for plinking if you like to read the ingredients on the soda can. For myself plinking is hunting practice so I use the low power scopes. If I did not hunt and just wanted to shoot cans or whatever for fun I might get a 4.5-14.

I like small light weight scopes on sporter weight guns. For heavy guns you might aswell run a big heavy scope too.

A good 3-9x32mm will be excellent for plinking and hunting out to 100yds. For target work, no less than 24x if shooting out to 100yds. Don't go cheap on the scope. Look at Weaver, Burris and Nikon. You won't be sorry and they hold their value. BSA, Barska, Tasco and house brand scopes are throw away scopes when they quit working.

I use a 3-9x on my tricked out 10/22. 4 power scopes on my standard 10/22 and henery H001t. Then red dots on my gsg5 and 15/22.

I like red dots on fun plinking guns. Plus when i take people shooting for the first time a red dot is easier for them.

On my good accuracy marlin 22 i have a 3-9 which is perfect because its lightweight and low profile. On my superb accuracy 1022 i have a 4-16 because i normally shoot this one prone with a bipod and very long distances so 16 is a big plus. A little heavy though for standing position shooting but if uve got the muscles to hold it steady its not a problem

Oh forgot to mention that for your rifle a long scope will ruin the appearance so i recommend a compact 3-9 power scope. Bushnell has a prettyo good one for around 100. Other than that a good compact 4x will serve u just fine in most situations

A fixed 6x scope is good for 100-125 yard on a 10" target easy. At 50 yards most .22 will shot flat. At 100 yards it has @ 5.6"-6.0" drop. I like Mildots personaly, but preferance is really up to the shooter.
