I've had that happen with a dirty 10/22 before. I've still got bits of brass and unburnt powder in my right hand, 20+ years later.

The early 15-22's, there were a couple problems with some springs. They've been more or less fixed now, but any .22 has the potential to fire OOB.

My 10/22 did that too when it was very dirty shooting Chicom ammo.
          Steel case wax bullet..

Rifle failed to cycle but I cleared it and no harm.

20yrs later it has not done that becuase I dont shoot ChiCom ammo

Fired a round without it being in battery. I think it's funny the shooter got all skeered.

Mebbe sounded louder in person than the video sound could capture.

Maybe "Robert" should've been shooting at something other than "Mickey Mouse".

If the chamber in a 22LR isn't cut right the rounds overpressure and will blow out the case heads. I had a rifle that from the first rounds was blowing out the heads. I called the shop and they said some of the early barrels had the chamber cut too tight. Becuase is took months to get he rifle I elected to fix it myself because I though if I sent it back to the factory I may never get it back. I bought the appropriate reamer from Brownells, reamed out the chamber and never had a problem again.

I'm sure the rifle is fine, the 22L has so little energy it can't do much damage. My rifle didn't even hurt the plastic mag after repeated blow-outs.
                    where are my pistol mags?

Would this be a consequence of improper bolt catch usage? Or is it mainly neglect in maintainer, buildup of copper/lead/propellant?

I had that happen with my 15-22, apparently it was rather common when the rifle first came out. I sent it in and S&W put softer springs into the gun and it's worked very well ever since, not a single malfunction over thousands of rounds (hard to believe, but true.)

In any case his upper is probably not trashed. It's enough to clear it and keep shooting (if you dare...)

Its really hard to get modern guns to fire out of battery. Modern trigger systems have disconnectors which do no disengage until the bolt is almost closed. Even at that point, once the hammer falls it will close the bolt when it strikes it.
